Hidden Gems: Meet Crystal W Guth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal W Guth.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my “voyage” while enlisted in the U.S. Navy; I spent six years on active duty. I found it to be an exciting opportunity to be surrounded by a cornucopia of people and culture. I loved the organization and structure of the military and the idea of being a part of something much bigger than myself.

I knew I wanted to go to college and the Navy gave me the opportunity. I attended night classes while stationed on an airbase in California and soon discovered my love for psychology. Upon completing my enlistment, I attended Graduate School at California Lutheran University and earned a Masters in Counseling Psychology. For three years, I interned with various populations, learning different approaches to therapy and growing a deep understanding for the challenges people face. It was during that time that I realized that while we are all so different as human beings, we are also very similar.

In 2017 I started my private practice, Crystal W Guth Therapy, and also decided to expand my horizons a little further by participating in a certificate program for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. I wanted to find a way to weave my love for organizational systems and psychology into my practice with individuals.

Currently, I work with young professionals, and we talk about mental health, relationships, family, work, and all the challenges that come with finding meaning and purpose in life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path has some bumps and turns along the way, all of which have been great learning experiences. One of the biggest struggles I faced while developing my practice was figuring out which population I would be able to serve best. I think it is important for therapist to have passion in what they do but also awareness of their limitations.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or LMFT for short. I work primarily with individuals struggling to adapt with the transitions in life. This includes work, marriage, children, or developmental periods – moving through adulthood comes with a suitcase of challenges.

I am known for incorporating family systems into the work I do with my patients and helping people overcome and move past unhelpful patterns. If anything sets me apart, it’s my tendency to challenge my patients with learning more about themselves and the part they play in their own life. While I practice empathy and have compassion, I also believe in developing ownership in one’s life and relationships.

I offer individual therapy for adults and young adults, which includes therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Family work. I also offer executive coaching for individuals looking to gain insight to their goals and develop assertive communication skills.

Lastly, I am now offering supervision to LMFT – associates looking to gain hours and experience.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
For various reasons Covid-19 flooded many therapists, including myself. It created many stressors for individuals and also left little space to avoid addressing mental health and/or relationship concerns. I think it really forced people to evaluate and assess their values and priorities.
