Hidden Gems: Meet Meiliana Sexton of Lash And Brow Beauty Lounge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meiliana Sexton.

Hi Meiliana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a love for beauty. I left my finance background to focus on the beauty industry. I was born in Indonesia came to the US for my master’s degree when I was 21. I didn’t finish it. I took a different path to beauty. My story begins in California about seven years ago. I am a cosmetologist. Soon after I graduated school, I quickly started applying for jobs. I became an assistant in a hair salon. I learned how to do hair, makeup, etc. Since eyelash extensions started in Asia, I already had eyelash extensions before. It’s popular here as well. I remember, one day my boss asked me” Is your lashes real or strip lashes? I said no it’s extension. He said, “why don’t you start doing lashes here, and I will help you get promoted.” And I completely fell in love with it. I knew I was really good at eyelash extensions and decided to move further and get the proper training and certification.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To be honest, it was hard for me to get to where I am at today. Long story short, I moved to Austin about six years ago with my ex-fiancé. I didn’t have anyone I knew here. I was working two jobs in eyelash industry to build my clientele. All of my clients loved me. I did my client’s lashes in my apartment. After a year and half working in the company. I was unsure at the time if I could branch out on my own. I rented a small room at a therapist office. I worked my a** off Monday-Sunday long hours everyday. New clients keep coming from word of mouth. I decided to move to a bigger space and hired more girls. Suddenly, I became pregnant. I was happy, but in the meantime why now? Thank God. I had a good pregnancy. I never stop working until the due date. Something happened in the shop. I had to go back to work a week after I had my baby. I can’t stop working. I love what I do and I don’t want to lose all of my clients. I am so grateful my parents came here to help with my son. Not long ago, after I had my baby. My ex-fiancé got sick. I’ve grown as a woman, a mom and as a business owner. I had to learn how to balance God, work, family time and personal time for myself. No matter what obstacles I’ve faced, I’ve overcome them. Until now, I never stop working and still planning to make it bigger.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
