Hidden Gems: Meet Monica McKitterick of Impact Family Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica McKitterick.

Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the medical field started at the age of 12 when I fractured my arm and went through a few years of personal medical treatment. I have always loved helping others and this field gave me a great way to accomplish this. I have been a nurse practitioner for over 12 years and spent the first ten years employed in the insurance-based healthcare system. Unfortunately, I learned that this business isn’t about taking care of people; it’s all about taking care of insurance companies. I would see 30+ patients/day and spend very little time actually listening and understanding their concerns. I was on a very tight schedule and had to get to the point and move to the next patient. It was a terrible way to help people and I felt very stuck.

My family was planning to relocate to central Texas to be closer to family and I had to figure out what I wanted to do. The idea of “Direct Primary Care” came to me via a Facebook ad and I was hooked. This model allows me to spend more time with patients and provide them exceptional care while keeping costs affordable. It was the best of both worlds and sounded a little too good to be true. I did all the research and opened my practice in April of 2019. I named my practice Impact Family Wellness because I wanted to make a true impact in the lives of all my patients.

Impact Family Wellness is a membership-based medical office that simply takes care of people how they should be. We spend time getting to know our patients, create real relationships with them, and ensure they are living the lives they want from a health and wellness standpoint. Amazingly, we do all of this while keeping costs low with memberships just $69/month of unlimited primary and urgent care. We provide care for more than 650 individuals, family members, and employees of businesses in the Austin area, all while loving what we do. It’s a true win-win situation for everyone!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m unsure any business owner can honestly say it has been a smooth road. I am very fortunate to have the great support of my family, which has made things easier but far from simple. My educational background is in nursing, not business, operations, marketing, or any other necessities for a business to run well. It has been a big learning curve, but have successfully navigated the world as an entrepreneur and feel we are doing it well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Impact Family Wellness?
We are a direct primary care office that takes care of humans instead of insurance companies. We truly value the relationships we have with our members and spend our time taking care of them. We care for individuals with great insurance, no insurance, health shares, Medicare, and everything in between. Because we are not dictated by insurance companies, we are able to provide care via text message and we give all our members direct access to text their provider. There is no middle man at our office. When you call our office, you get a nurse practitioner on the phone, the one that actually makes the decisions so there is no waiting around for days for a follow-up. Our pricing is affordable so that we are an option for nearly everyone that is looking for health care. Simply put – we care about our members, and it shows.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I relocated to Texas in March of 2019 and opened a new model of medical care without knowing anyone in the area. I didn’t have list of patients that knew of my knowledge and skill and I was opening a model of healthcare that many have never heard of. I went from a consistent, reliable income, to none at all in hopes that I could build my practice and provide for my family. It was a huge risk, but one that my family was supportive of and has proven to be worth it. I feel the best things in life must hold some type of risk, otherwise, everyone would have it and it wouldn’t be so great. 🙂
