Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Pollack.
Hi Carly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a super anxious kid growing up, and I didn’t have any tools to help myself deal with my emotions so I used food to soothe. My skin was a mess, my digestion system was a wreck, my weight went up and down 5 pounds every week depending on my pendulum swing between food prison and reckless abandonment. My anxiety was through the roof and finally, I just came to a point where I told myself “Carly, what you are doing week after week, it’s not working. You have to try something else.”
Even though I was struggling, I was also fascinated with the idea that we had control over our healthy by the decisions we made every day. I knew there was a huge mental piece to this, and decided if I was going to truly heal my body and my relationship with food that I would need to devote my life to this. I went to school for holistic nutrition, got my Master’s Degree, became a CCN, and along the way studied all the psychology and self-development tools needed to really help someone make permanent changes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I worked for Whole Foods piloting the first-ever nutrition consulting program for the corporate headquarters. I remember at the time they were pushing hard for me to teach vegan, low fat, principles and I believed different diets worked for different people. I was terrified to start my own business but saw this as a push to jump into the unknown.
I couldn’t afford an office space right away so I drove to client’s homes and met them at busy coffee shops. Looking back, I’m so grateful my first clients trusted me to help guide them because I was still creating the process and didn’t have a clue on how to run a successful business.
Tony Robbins says that we overestimate what we can do in a short amount of time but underestimate what we can do in a decade. Looking back now, as we currently have multiple offices and a full staff, I love seeing how humbly I began.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Losing weight or getting healthy isn’t about what you think it’s about. It’s not really about the food. It’s about what lies underneath the food. Your plate is a reflection of your inner state. And losing weight is also not really about looking good in a bikini – although it feels pretty damn good to be proud of the way you look.
Our desire to be healthy is really about what we think will bring happiness. The end goal of all goals is to be happy, which, health is a part of. You can’t lose the weight to get happy, and other people say you should get happy first and then lose the weight, but the truth is that you’ve got to work on both at the same time.
We have to learn how to connect with ourselves, change our stories, manage our emotions, change the meaning of stress and fear. Only then will we find the discipline to change. Permanent change and radiant health takes an immense amount of discipline. I teach people how to create the authentic desire to work on themselves day after day. It’s that consistency the creates an extraordinary life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe everything is unfolding at the perfect time for all of us. Things don’t happen “to” us, they happen “for” us. In this case, luck is not a factor.
