Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Muzzarelli.
Hi Chad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Mad+Musty Studios back in 2011. While studying at the Art Institute of Austin, I noticed the need for screen printing for school projects. I began to learn the process deeper than in high school. When I started bringing my poster prints to class, people started having me print them. After school, I was full-time at Industry printshop for 5 years. The people at Industry helped me learn everything I needed to know. After Industry, I left the US for an artist residency in Oaxaca, Mexico, where I spent a year teaching woodcut and other forms of printmaking under a master. At the same time, I showed them how to screen-print when I returned. I was over at FSG printing. I was mainly doing design and prints for bands. After a few other shops, I started focusing on my shop and have been doing that for the past few months.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Any business is never a smooth ride. I have been in many shops to see what works and what doesn’t. I’ve had up and downs, but the road still leads to the end goal of being successful. So I try to keep the motivation going and moving forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It all started with portraits now it’s taken a little turn. When I returned from Mexico, I want to do woodcut portraits. I do as Commission occasionally, but it’s changed significantly in the last few months. I now work with logos, branding, and poster and shirt designs for bands. I have a very southwestern feel to my work. I get that from growing up in Arizona as a kid. I love patterns and textures. These all go so well with screen printing that it has fallen into my lap. Also, I have been doing a lot of badge design for logos and branding projects.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
When I was a teenager, I rode BMX professionally. In a horrible accident, I hit my head at the skatepark. I was life-flighted to the hospital and was put in ICU for a few days, where I wasn’t supposed to make it. After my long recovery from that head injury, I couldn’t do much. So I started painting and doing artwork. This was crazy because I could never draw or paint before this time. The doctors ran a bunch of tests which are now in medical school books. They said the impact on my brain boosted my creative side and must have sparked something that helped me become an artist.
