Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Deterling.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It started the month before I was born. My dad started his company in August and I was born in September. Growing up, I always saw my parents work hard. Summers and weekend, I would work at my dad’s office, stickering brochures, answering phones, or organizing files. I believe this is what gave me my entrepreneurial spirit. I did as was expected of me, received a bachelor’s and began working in the “real” world. Even in college, I was scheming of businesses but I hadn’t quite found what it was yet. As I was working, I had a friend who was an Esthetician and I knew you could work for yourself in this field, plus I loved beauty products so I went back to school to get my license. After that, I quit my job and went traveling for a year then moved to Austin to start working for myself as an esthetician. During this, I was approached by a skincare company to sell and educate in the Texas market. This is where my educational journey begins. During this time every two years, I had to renew my license but the courses were so boring with zero new information. That is where idea for Kudos was born. What if I took what I was already doing, put it in video form, and licensed it through TDLR so professionals could receive their hours for learning real knowledge.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think life is always bumpy but it either makes you or breaks you. My parents were divorced when I was three months old and still to this day don’t really like each other that much. I think that has always been a struggle for me but I think it’s just my “normal” for now. I’m still very torn between the two even as an adult. Splitting my time has always caused unnecessary stress but that is where I learned to be efficient with my time and to really make it count because I knew I had to move on to other things to get done.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kudos?
My business delivered entertaining education continuing education to Texas licensed professionals. Kudos brand is all about making learning fun and worth your time. As a licensed professional, I had to renew my license and waste four hours of my life learning nothing and being bored to sleep. Kudos take new knowledge and deliver it in an entertaining way while allowing professionals to earn their continuing education hours to renew their license. There is no continuing education company like Kudos. Most are black and white slide decks that you sit through for 4 hours. We currently have four courses soon to release a 5th. One course for Estheticians, 2 for cosmetology, and 1 Business Basics course that any cosmetology license can take to complete their required hours.
I’m most proud of what I’ve accomplished in a short time and the quality in which the courses have been produced. I really take a lot of care in how the video sound and quality turn out. We don’t have the biggest budget but we make what we have work to the highest quality. I want my fellow professionals to be able to learn good knowledge to help them grow and earn more money.
How do you define success?
Failing and getting back up to try again.
