Rising Stars: Meet Brandon Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Flores.

Hi Brandon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Austin, TX in 1994. I lived in various parts of Austin early on when I finally moved to Thurmond Heights summer of 2003. I lived there till I graduated from high school in 2013. I have a love for Austin thats almost bittersweet in nature. Cause every time I come back I relive things all over again. Some memories better than others.

Living in the projects, you see almost everything. Sometimes it trips me out thinking back to how we used to live. How some of my people are still living. I spent most of my life around my father’s side of the family so I grew up in a Hispanic household. Growing up I almost died, experienced various horrors, tragedies, and alot of close calls in many different ways that would have changed my entire life. Somehow, I’m alive and out of prison. Two things I never thought of for myself at the age of 27.

My mother died during my sophomore year of high school. It was after this that I began putting more energy into my music. I wasn’t interested in school. I loved football but mainly for the contact; I didn’t have the discipline back then to truly commit like a real athlete should. Mainly because making music caught my heart. It kept me in the room and out of trouble. It also gave me a space to not only create but to use what I create like a type of medicine. It was therapy for me. It helped me explain alot of what I went through.

School I was never interested in. I was able to perform a handful of times during student assemblies and other school events which was dope. That was some of the first performances I’ve done. I promoted like crazy while in high school. Even was able to perform at some clubs in downtown Austin my senior year of high school. I liked school cause of football, the homies, and being able to promote. I was never that into the academic side of things.

The only reason I went to college is because my mother told me to. She always said, “I don’t know what your gonna be but you’re going to college.” After she died I made sure to apply. School wasn’t hard for me although I wasn’t interested. Of course, like many some subjects were harder than others but I managed to pass even though I was not the best student. I was accepted to the University of Texas at San Antonio where I decided to study Sociology.

Since graduating high school in 2013 I moved from Austin to San Antonio, Texas for college. I finished in 2017 with a bachelors in Sociology and a minor in Audio Technology. While in college I continued to work with various videographers, performing at shows, and most of all release music. By the time I finished my undergraduate degree I released 4 mixtapes and 1 album; not including all the music produced during my high school years.

In 2017 my son was born and I went into graduate school at UTSA for my master’s in sociology. During my master’s program, I was able to release 2 albums. I finished in the spring of 2020 with my master’s in Sociology specializing in quantitative methods; the beginning of the pandemic. Because of the pandemic there were no jobs, my job went under, and no vaccines at the time. So I dropped 2 mixtapes and created a business strategy and implementation plan. This business called BIGG FACCZ is an entertainment agency with a variety of functions as modeled in our business plan. Some of these functions include music production, audio engineering, campaigns, hosting, and many other facets. I also decided to go back to school for my PhD in Applied Demography at UTSA.

During all of this time, music for me has been a variety of experiences. From performing at shows, producing full records, video shoots, and hosting; it truly is something that continues to grow. I’ve been blessed to work with many people in and outside of Austin. Some artists I’ve worked with sold millions of records and others are legends in their own city but the art of the music is what’s most special to me. Then to be able to form BIGG FACCZ LLC is something that Lord blessing will be something that will help us grow what we have that much more. To help create opportunity and equity through BIGG FACCZ LLC within our communities with the same art that saved my life throughout all of these years is truly a dream envisioned.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was never easy. Growing up poor we had little opportunity to do anything. Once I got into college I would use my student loans to invest into my music. Continued to do the same with my LLC, BIGG FACCZ. So while I am in school I also would invest into my small business.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a musician I write, record, mix, master, and produce most of my music; especially more recently. I usually stick with MIDI but I have sampled some records for beats every now and then. I also did some work with graphic design and videography but my specialty definitely is within the music realm.

What I’m most proud of is the amount of work I’ve been able to accomplish over the years. What I’ve been able to produce over the years is truly a wide variety of work; features as well.

What I’m also proud of is my accomplishments in my education. With what I have earned I understand various demographic stances as well as the means to analyze various potential trends within those demographics.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is being able to reach your fullest potential that the Lord has set out for yourself.
