Rising Stars: Meet E.C Soto of Bradshaw Crossing

Today we’d like to introduce you to E.C Soto.

Hi E.C., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hippie Cup Cafe originated from a sketch on paper to a plan of action. I wanted to gain control of my life, so I was withdrawn from school to pursue my business, hobbies, and lifestyle, such as music and skating. I created a business plan with commitment and persistence and even built a sign with my grandpa! My mom bought a triple banner from Home Depot in which I cut out my circle and then made it my logo. That brings us to the sign you see today! The circle, turquoise hippie logo just stuck.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a fair journey, I’d say. Nothing worth it should come as easy, I believe. I never took a business class, but I scour YouTube or look for information on Google. I know it’s not the best education, but the education system is another situation. I felt leaving was best for me and my future. I felt I had to do something. I want people and kids to know that life is in your hands. Make the best of it. Make the most of it. If all you have is you, then that’s all you need. I told myself that I could do this. Now I’m a business and local vendor. However, in the past few years, I’ve been struggling with epilepsy or seizures. We’re still on that medical trial to find the right medicine, but I won’t let my illness define me. So I continue to work when I can, which is most of the time.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
As a bedroom musician who needed a band to start, I started playing guitar when I was 8. My brother was learning, and I needed things to do. It also became a great bonding experience for us. I would be practicing on one of the crappy guitars while my brother taught me on the better one. This went on for about 2 or 3 years, and one Christmas, I got my guitar! I still have it. A rocketeer sticker-bombed, and the finish chipped. After getting my guitar, I decided to start playing the drums. I couldn’t stop tapping my feet anyways. So I’d practice tapping on the ground and my lap along to songs for months. After begging for a drum set, I finally got one.

I was spoiled. But they were put to use for sure. I loved playing the drums, and I still do. After a while, I wanted to learn to sing as well. So with tons more research and silent practice when everyone is away, I’d progress till I could not sound like my throat was a blender. And fast forward, I just got more curious and started touching the keys. After a few months of practice, I became ok, and I still love these instruments. I never have the space and time for all of them. But it’s a neat problem to have.

What are your plans for the future?
I will pursue all of my goals to start a band, skateboard for GnarYard more, and get a trailer. I’m the future of the hippy cup. Then one day, get a brick-and-mortar. Radix Coffee is amazing. Vibes and all!!
