Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Miller-Camp.
Hi Heather, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was young, as far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a fashion photographer. I was kind of obsessed with specific models and seeing them in these photographs with cool outfits and artsy scenes created for them was very fun and interesting to me. I took photography in 9th grade but at that time, it was film and developing in the darkroom. I think that sort of overwhelmed me and was hard for me to grasp. I didn’t do much with photography for a while after that. Fast forward to things being much more digital and I got back into it. While my kids were little and I was staying home, I started doing family photography here and there. That lasted many years (I still do it from time to time.) Just a month before the pandemic hit, I decided what I was doing wasn’t creative enough for me. Thinking back to my love of fashion photography, I started taking beauty portraits. I had only done a few before everything got shut down. I took that time to really learn some photoshop like I had always wanted, changed my business name, watch video after video to learn techniques and started to create whatever was in my head. I’m still doing that now and I am the happiest I have been with my photography.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’d say the road has been semi-smooth. With most things in life there a few bumps to progress. It’s either with reaching the goal or what life throws you while you are reaching the goal. I’ve had a few struggles that affected me mentally and I had to take a few breaks, so my progress took longer than I would have liked. I’m also a single mom going to school so that slows things down on the creative end. Honestly though, it’s just what life is and I just keep on keepin on. I think mostly I just wish I had gotten here sooner but only because it would be much more fun if I had.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait and fine art photography. I love meeting new people and hearing what they are like and what is interesting to them. I love strange art, gothic things, flowers, hearts and big-eyed dolls. I love the combination of sweet and sassy or tough and soft. I do not always have a specific direction but I think all these things are where the random ideas that pop in my head come from. I’m proud of a lot of my recent work and the fact that I was able to learn as much as the amount of time I did. I think I’m most proud though that I finally started doing what I love in the way that I want to. I’m amazed at how much more people have discovered my work and tell me that they haven’t seen anything else like it around here.
