Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Kell.
Hi Leslie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My life as an artist ignited around the age of nine. I can scarcely remember a time that was not invested in creative pursuits of some kind. And as I look back, I realize I’ve also been a photographer for most of my life. I began my career as a painter and illustrator and transitioned to a graphic artist and designer. Eventually, I was able to bring the two sides of my creative practice together and throw in a bit of photography too. In late 2008, I created my first digital composition using my original photography and Adobe Creative Suite. This led me on the journey back into the world of fine art. Suddenly I was able to create, not for a client, but with a new freedom to explore my own visions. I quickly realized that the possibilities were endless and years later, I am still chasing that elusive perfect image.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a digital artist in the beginning of the movement, the very legitimacy of digital art was a barrier, I was met with while introducing my artwork to the world. At the time, the digital medium was skirting the fringes of acceptance. Now my challenges lie in keeping up with the fast-moving technology!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work often explores the complexities of adjacent realities and perceptions. The imagery is optimistic and celebrates the natural world. The complex and layered works are visual encounters that aren’t easy to forget. My body of work is unique and highly recognizable. I’m proud of the original technique I’ve developed and nurtured. I’m inspired by the notion that I have so much more to explore and share. In recent years, I’ve taken my imagery a step further by adding layers of video to create magical hybrids that I call “cinemagraphs”. These soothing, mesmerizing videos can be found throughout Austin Bergstrom International Airport on the digital gate markers. They have also been included in juried exhibitions, the digital issue of the Summer 2020 NARM Quarterly and physician waiting rooms. They can be viewed on my YouTube channel.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love to work with collectors to create a special piece for their space. My images are fully scalable and can be sized to fit almost anywhere, even that narrow column or odd-shaped niche. My artwork can be printed on almost anything that can be imagined, complementing a spectrum of styles and personal tastes. I offer exclusive virtual hangings that bring visions to life. With a photo and dimensions of a space, I’m able to present options so the client can see the artwork in their space and choose just the right piece. I’m participating in the Austin Studio Tour in November; details are on my website. You can also find my work at the Blue Genie Christmas Bazaar through Christmas eve this year for the first time. I have many Austin and Holiday themed pieces created for these events.
