Rising Stars: Meet The STS Guys Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to The STS Guys Podcast. Their team shares their story with us below:

The STS Guys is a weekly pop culture podcast. Our hosts (Jeremy, Larry, Mike and Scott) are all native Texans. When we’re not waiting in line at the Whataburger drive thru or hanging out at Barton Springs we’re probably watching the latest Marvel movie or the new show on Netflix.

Our origin story is pretty simple. We all worked at the same company and had been friends for a while. One day during a designated break period, Jeremy turned to Larry and said “You know I always wanted to start a podcast.”

Without hesitation Larry responded, “I’ve always wanted to have a podcast too!”

Scott jumped in and said, “Let’s start a podcast!”

That following weekend we met up at Jeremy’s house and huddled around a single microphone at his kitchen table and recorded our first episode.

Mike just kind of showed up one night and never left.

Five years and 200+ episodes later we’re still here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
64% of the podcasts in Apple’s podcast library have fewer than 10 episodes available. A huge part of our longevity is our strategy around preparation. Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success”.

Like a lot of Texans, Covid forced us to change up our routine. Movie theatres shut down. Television shows halted their production. Supply chain issues were delaying the shipment of our favorite collectibles. Our usual topics had become much more inconsistent that in the past.

This forced us to get creative and in turn, we created some of our best content. We love going to comic book conventions and covering those on the podcast. That wasn’t an option so we got together with a group of podcaster friends and hosted a three days virtual con on Twitch. We revisited old classics and dedicated an entire episode to the PBS Kids show, Arthur. We paid people on Fiverr to write and sing songs about us.

It was challenging at first but we quickly found a good format that we have stuck with ever since.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
There are a lot of podcasts who cover the same type of topics we do. Sometimes pop culture podcasts can get overly focused on structure and format. We don’t do that. We wing it. That’s become part of our charm. Sure we have a rough plan of what we’re going to discuss each week but we let the conversation flow naturally and we may not cover everything we had intended.

Our best episodes have been the ones where we veer off into a random topic. Sometimes our listeners help with this as well. We record live on Twitch and enjoy interacting with the chat.

We try to make our podcast as interactive as possible. There’s even an STS Guys bingo card that our friend, Andrew from the Toy Rewind Podcast, made for us so you can play along while you’re listening.
