Today we’d like to introduce you to Nycia Emerson
Hi Nycia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a small-town Texas girl with a big heart and creative mindset, I always knew I would step into a world of creativity in my career. My journey to where I am today came with a lot of Faith in God and my love for beauty and people. As a designer, boy mom, wife, author, and ministry leader. I have to change out the fru fru dress for some sneakers and jeans often, to keep up with my boys and their sports.
Over the years, I have worn many hats, from graduating from college with a degree in Business and Finance to becoming a Wedding Planner and Designer. “I like to think it’s always a process to get where you are going.”
I have had to allow my experiences throughout life to help me constantly learn and give myself space to fail and grow. Also, I am continually evolving in a way that really allows me to cherish life, walk in big faith and step into all joy that comes with it each day.
When God put She Inspires in my heart in 2013, I wasn’t sure what he had in store since She Inspires was born as a simple inspirational blog where I shared all things interior design, fashion, and table settings. Gathering women in 2015 as I hosted my first conference gave me a whole new outlook on my purpose. My love for inspiring everyone around me has taken me where I am today, from designing a client’s lovely home, setting the table for women to gather over brunch, or writing another book. I like to say I am a well-rounded creator of beauty. Any chance to share God’s love brings me so much joy.
I am constantly blown away by all that God is doing within the community of women worldwide and how he allows us to blossom in a way that gives us confidence and enables us to connect and link arms.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My saying at home is, “Life is not always peaches & cream, but no matter what, life is beautiful.”
I have had to overcome many obstacles throughout my years as an entrepreneur. Things sometimes happen in life that push you to appreciate where you came from that much more. Being a business owner and influencer is always challenging, especially when you constantly want to get it right, and perfectionism sometimes leads me to overthink things. I have learned to allow myself to take a step back sometimes and sit in quiet and stillness when I am overwhelmed by new ideas, business decisions, or simple daily tasks.
One obstacle that shook me to the core came in 2020 during COVID, when I had to close the doors to my beautiful studio. When you step into the hard of something you have dreamed up for years and give it your all, the last thing you want to do is take the grip off. Letting go sometimes comes with feeling like a failure and learning to navigate the success that came even after the closed doors. My studio brought me so much joy, and watching my clients enjoy it brought constant sunshine.
Four years later, I have realized that in order to move forward, you have to sometimes find yourself dreaming bigger than before, setting new goals, and recognizing that things happen for a reason. And that’s exactly what I have done!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an interior designer/stylist at Nycia Emerson Design, a faith author, and the founder of She Inspires. Some may call me a creator of beautiful things.
As a designer and creative, I enjoy creating one-of-a-kind, timeless designs that my clients can enjoy for years. I specialize in residential and commercial design. I am known for bringing a beautiful aesthetic to life by creating a stunning design story for my clients through a beautifully curated color story or a beautifully designed space. When I’m not creating for my clients, I usually dream up a brunch space for my She Inspires organization, where I bring women together to be inspired to live in purpose and faith.
What sets me apart is that I am constantly inspiring everyone around me. I feel like we all should be able to experience joy and bring a little beauty into our everyday lives. I try to bring a piece of that joy through my everyday connections, and strive to be my most authentic self. I have to say it makes me proud to strive to be the best in my purpose and touch others along the way.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking can be overwhelming because we always want to find ourselves in the right rooms. As a business owner, I learned early on that to avoid burnout and feeling overwhelmed with networking, you have to do what works for you. Go to the right events, set your expectations, and be okay with having those uncomfortable conversations about your business goals. You never know who will be interested.
When looking for mentors, my advice would be to make a detailed list of what you expect to get and why. Set your goals and expectations ahead of time; from there, scope out some organizations or people that you would like to meet and do your research. You can also start on social media and connect with like-minded professionals or creatives. I have made some beautiful Social Media connections with other entrepreneurs. You never know who’s open to a fun collaboration.
Lastly, remember that everyone has to start somewhere, and always give yourself a chance and give yourself Grace.
