Today we’d like to introduce you to Keighley Voorheis
Hi Keighley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After going through a tough break-up, I was searching for a way to reconnect with myself. A good friend suggested I come out dancing with her, and it lead me into the Austin two-step community; learning how to dance and becoming part of the community has been a transformative experience.
From the moment I stepped into the dance hall, I knew I was beholding something special. The energy in the room was infectious, and it was wonderful to see people of all ages coming together to share in the joy of dance. Learning two-step not only allowed me to pick up a new skill but also provided an outlet for expression and creativity.
What made this community truly special was the way it fostered connections. I met so many incredible people who were welcoming and eager to share their passion for dance and live music. We formed friendships that extended beyond the dance floor that have really enriched my daily life here in Austin.
Additionally, the backdrop of some of these honky tonks and dance halls that reside in historic landmark buildings added a unique charm to these magical dance nights. The combination of learning, making friends, and enjoying live music in such beautiful settings created a sense of belonging that I had been missing.
Overall, the Austin two-step dance community not only helped me heal but also enriched my life in ways I never anticipated. It reminded me of the importance of community and the joy that can come from stepping outside of your comfort zone.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honing a new skill like dancing can definitely be challenging, but that’s part of what makes it so rewarding. There were moments when I struggled to master certain steps or techniques. There are so many different kinds of dancers that integrate into the scene with different styles and backgrounds. That, in and of itself is a challenge to adjust to from dance to dance throughout a night at the honky tonk, but it is what makes it fun and fresh! I found that pushing through those challenges only deepened my appreciation for the art of dance. Many of us take videos of our dances, and it is really fun to look back and see the progress that is made.
As I continued to learn, I became eager to explore more styles and improve my skills. Eventually, I took the leap to learn how to lead in dance. This was a game-changer for me! It opened up a whole new world and perspective on dancing. I found joy not just in the movement but in guiding others and continuing to expand connections through dance.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Growing up, creativity was a huge part of my life, especially through music. Playing instruments and immersing myself in various musical styles instilled a deep appreciation for rhythm and expression. This foundation has translated beautifully into my involvement in the dance community, where music truly reigns supreme.
In dance, I see artistic expression come to life in real time. The connection between music and movement is something magical—each step and turn reflects the nuances of the sound, creating an immersive experience that resonates deeply with me.
More recently, I’ve had the opportunity to start teaching classes with Double or Nothing Two Step, a well-known staple in the Austin dance community. It’s been incredibly rewarding to share my passion and knowledge with others. What’s particularly special is that two-stepping is trending right now. People are drawn to it, and the community has blossomed, offering opportunities to learn almost any night of the week in Austin and throughout Texas.
Being part of this vibrant dance scene, where I can combine my love for music with teaching and fostering creativity in others, is truly fulfilling. It’s exciting to witness how the dance community continues to grow and evolve, bringing people together through the joy of movement and music.
