Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Dice
Hi Ruby , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Ruby Dice is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has been steadily gaining recognition for her electrifying, genre-defying sound that incorporates elements of country, soul, blues, and pop.
ABOUT RUBY DICE
Ruby Dice is a Colorado native who currently resides in Texas and has been performing music for as long as she can remember. At the age of 22, she relocated to Texas to pursue a career in music after beginning her musical career in her family’s church band. She has accumulated musical experience over the years by playing bass in a variety of bands, developing as a songwriter, and winning the respect she merits for her musical abilities. She started performing all over the country at this time, sharing stages with artists like Brian Wilson, Dale Watson, and many others.
After the global COVID-19 pandemic hit, Ruby Dice began to concentrate on her musical career. She started writing the songs for her debut album, Not In Love, which was released on September 29, 2023, while working with musicians like Gordy Quist from the Band of Heathens.
Ruby is currently working on her second album and has some big surprises up her sleeve for this next project!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been anything but a smooth road. But it’s been worth every struggle. I spent my early years touring with all kinds of bands across multiple styles. I’ve gotten to see most of this country in my travels and have met some incredible people along the way.
But with the amazing times there’s always a down side.
I’ve had vehicles break down mid tour. That is always a fun adventure when you are in the middle of nowhere.
As a female musician/songwriter there has always been an added stress of safety on the road. And believe me I’ve seen it all in it’s ugly self on that front. From having a drunk venue owner try to force me into a cab after refusing to pay me to a stalker that didn’t live in this reality.
Money can be tightrope walk when you are living off 8 notes and a dream. I think the hardest struggle for me has been mental more so than anything. Maintaining value in yourself when money and show attendance doesn’t always reflect it is a HARD struggle that myself and just about every musician I’ve worked along side struggles with.
A music career isn’t for the faint of heart and that is the truth. It’s not a for sure deal even if you work extremely hard. Like my grandpa used to say. You gotta be tough if you’re going to be dumb.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer/songwriter/bassist. I’ve played full time in Austin for 11 years and love what I do. I’m known for being the Queen of the Denim Disco. A funky country songwriter with songs that will keep em’ on the dance floor. I’m incredibly proud of my team my partner and I have put together. The band and I have a brand new album we’re working on that I can’t wait to show the world.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others are my songs. I sing while playing bass so I tend to write groovier songs than a lot of country acts. I really try to blend the soul of this city in into my music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve been “lucky” in that I knew just about everyone in the scene from my bass playing days before I started my own project. It wasn’t hard for me to walk into venues and get slots because they all had worked with me so many times in the past. I’d call that “luck” hard work. I’ve been very lucky to have so many great people following my music over the years.
But if the universe wants to send me a string of good luck I’ll sure take it. My bad luck stream has been a little intense this new year. My car was totaled after being hit by a DPS officer and getting paid by the state for damages is easier said than done, making touring impossible for the time being. Which is ok for a while since we’ll be in the studio for the rest of this month. Alas roll with the punches work hard and it’ll all work out in the end.
