Rising Stars: Meet Scott Osborn of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Osborn

Hi Scott, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Music has been a lifelong interest, and when digital audio workstations came into their own, I wanted to see what was possible. I picked up (what was then) Propellerhead’s Reason, and once I learned my way around it, was astonished by what kind – and quality – of music you could generate using just your computer.

That was version 3, released in 2005. Nowadays I’m using (the just-released) version, 13, and during the 25 years in between, I’ve found time to experiment, compose, produce, and record music most every week.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Making music can be a very smooth road, and I’ve produced a ton of it. But really, in the music industry, that’s not how success is measured. The struggles there are to become bankable, ie. to be profitable. And I’m not profitable and will probably never be.

But that’s OK, you know? For me, the reward is in the creative process and being content (or not!) with what I produce.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Ultimately? I use my computer and voice to make music that I like, and hope you like it too. The genre of music has changed over time, of course – I had a reggae period and an alt/punk period. Nowadays my music is typically more funk – I guess you’d call it funky alternative.

My most well-known piece is “Stepped In Gum”, which was featured as the Song of the Day on KUTX on 7/3/24.

What sets me apart (probably?) is that I’m an old geezer. I recently retired, am in my mid-60s, and I sit in my home office and crank out funky dance tunes.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The music industry is constantly changing. That said, I think music consumers have come to fully embrace the subscription model (ie, Spotify, Tidal, Amazon Music, Apple Music, etc.), so what will change is how consumers find the next big sound.
