Rising Stars: Meet Perry Rickard of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perry Rickard

Hi Perry, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my family moved around a lot – and there were a lot of us to move, with five kids, two parents, and a dog! Every move was a little bit different: sometimes we’d be moving last minute, sometimes upgrading, sometimes downsizing.

I learned from a very young age the unique challenges that come with figuring out a space and making it work for you. I often had to learn how to let go, choose what to keep, and release sentimental items. I discovered the power of a space to bring a sense of grounding and flow to life and how connected our environment and emotions are.

And most importantly, I learned that home is not things – it’s you. It’s the energy in your space, the way you feel while you’re there, the intrinsic worth you have beyond what you own…a space that shines because you are there.

Now, as a professional organizer, my passion is helping people bring a sense of peace, flow, and function to the spaces where they spend their everydays – whether a home, an office, a dorm, or even a single room that needs a little extra TLC.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2019, I had to withdraw from college because I couldn’t walk. After about two months of doctors visits, I got diagnosed with C-PTSD. A few months later, in an attempt to heal, I signed up for a National Outdoor Leadership School course where I lived outside for 90 days straight with 12 strangers.

After my diagnosis and completion of my NOLS course, I felt called to think deeply about how I can use my pain to help others. I traveled around the country trying different jobs and measuring the impact the job had on myself, others, and the world. In June 2023, I was working on Hawaii and it all finally dawned on me: I don’t need to seek outside of myself to help others. Organizing is the gift I’ve naturally been given to give.

When healing, the journey feels intangible. But professional organizing is tangible hope! I love working with people in big, transitional moments like divorce, aging, and more. I love that I have the opportunity to guide people through their big emotions while transforming their physical spaces. If it wasn’t for my diagnosis, I wouldn’t have the capacity to understand their pain. As with most stories, my struggles became my success.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I help people declutter and organize their homes so they can live happier and more peaceful lives. I am not the decluttering police. Rather, I help people make authentic decisions so they can let go of items and ideas that no longer serve them. I take all donations to vetted, local non profits along with selling specific items.

When it comes to organizing, I know that clients are ready to get this off their plate, so I create highly efficient project plans. I also shop for all of the necessary products and curate customized systems and teachings so the client can maintain the space when I go.

I am known for my kindness and work ethic. I specialize in helping people who are going through a life transition such as divorce, empty nesting, aging, raising a family, and losing a loved one.

One important thing to note is that I always offer a free in-person consultation, so there’s no pressure to see what it would look like to get you, or a loved one, organized.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice on finding a mentor is to find someone whose values and lifestyle inspires you. They don’t necessarily have to work in the same industry.
