Community Highlights: Meet Audrey Scheck of Audrey Scheck Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Scheck

Hi Audrey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew-up in a small, rural farming community in southeast Texas. Everyone knew everyone, and I loved it so much. When I was in middle school, my parents built a custom home from the ground up. They allowed me to be part of the process, and I vividly remember having free reign to design my own bedroom and bathroom. Even though I didn’t know it at the time, my passion for design was definitely sparked back then.
I later went on to study advertising at the University of Texas, a field I loved because it was both creative and fun. I spent a decade working in advertising, mostly on the ad sales side of the business, with the majority of my career at Us Weekly in Los Angeles. When I was ready to move on from corporate America, I stepped back to focus on my children. During that time, I began remodeling our 100-year-old Spanish-style home in LA. I shared that process online, and later, when we moved to another 100-year-old Spanish-style house, I shared that journey as well.
After relocating to Austin, we bought a new-construction spec home, and I started documenting the transformation to make it feel more aligned with our aesthetic. As I shared these projects, people began asking for my help. It all happened naturally. We moved to Austin in December 2020, and by March 2021, I launched Audrey Scheck Design. My earliest clients were predominantly friends and family who were very casually “hiring” me as their designer. I soon realized I needed to make it official, so I created a name for the company. I purchased a logo on Etsy and hired my first employee two months later. Now, four years later, we’re a team of fifteen females with clients around the country.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and I am so grateful for that. As an entrepreneur, I feel like the bumps are crucial in helping us pave our way. Having never studied or worked in the design industry, I started ASD without any relevant experience. It’s been a long four years of establishing a process in every sector of the business. We’ve had to clearly define who we are, what our firm stands for, and what we want to offer. It hasn’t always been smooth, but it’s been incredibly fun, and I’m so proud of what we’ve built from scratch.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Audrey Scheck Design is a full-service design firm based in Austin with projects located around the country. We focus on residential new builds and remodels, and we have also done several commercial projects. While most of our projects involve some aspect of construction, we also take on furnishing and styling projects that don’t involve construction. Our willingness to work on projects of all size, scopes, and aesthetics is one of the things that sets us apart from other firms. We have somewhat of a defined aesthetic as a firm, but we are still open to working on projects that may fall outside of that. Our focus is on tailoring each project to the individual client and home, honoring the heritage of their architecture and personal style.
I’m most proud of the fact that we have a team of fifteen women who work in design, most of whom never studied design and have made it a second career. The women of ASD are incredibly hardworking and talented, and I so enjoy getting to work with them every day.
We are passionate about being involved in the local Austin community and supporting other makers and vendors here. While we partner with many in the construction industry, including general contractors, we also emphasize incorporating custom solutions from Austin-based talent, such as millworkers, tile craftsmen, and artists. We strive to stay true to the authenticity of Austin and support local businesses.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t overthink it. This is a lesson that I learned at a young age from my grandmother and have carried with me throughout my career. I’m the type of person who doesn’t let fear dictate my decisions. I’ve always approached things with the mentality of, “I’d rather regret trying and failing than not trying at all.” It’s important to me that we keep moving forward and at least give things a shot.

Pricing:

  • We work on projects of all sizes both locally in Austin and remotely, and I offer hourly consultations that can be done virtually or in-person.
  • For construction projects, we have a minimum of $50,000 for the entire project. This includes construction, materials, and design—not just the construction cost.
  • This approach makes design services accessible to everyone—whether they’re building a new home or just want a second opinion on a selection for their living room.
