Meet Christina Austin Lopez of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Austin Lopez

Christina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Atlanta Georgia because both my parents are engineers who graduated from Georgia Tech. My mom is Puerto Rican and my dad grew up in Maryland, so I am ethnically mixed and bilingual. I love working out, cycling, and scuba diving. My first “gig” was singing with my mom at church when I was 4 years old. I took dance and voice lessons growing up, but it wasn’t until I was in high school that I realized that I wanted to pursue a theater career. I chose to go to Baylor because it has a great acting program and graduated with a BFA in Theatre Performance with a Musical Theatre Concentration. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to have worked at some of the best Regional Theaters including The Alley Theatre in Houston, A.D. Players in Houston, North Carolina Theatre in Raleigh and, of course, the ZACH Theater in Austin. I am currently a proud member of the acting company at Dallas Theater Center.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Pursuing a career in acting has not been easy. You need to have a though skin and be able to deal with rejection. I learned to deal with rejection in high school when a teacher told me that I was never going to make it for a variety of unfounded reasons, so I learned early on that not everyone was going to like me. This has served me well when during auditions. One of the things that makes a performing career so hard is that we are constantly being judged in audition rooms and, as actors, we need to learn to compartmentalize the feeling of rejection that come from the many auditions where we do not book. Learning that being asked to audition is a win in and of itself and looking at auditions as performance opportunities helps me stay grounded.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an actress, singer and dancer. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work at some amazing theaters with some incredible performers. Early in my professional career my dance training was definitely an asset. In fact, the first two professional shows I booked were dance heavy shows where I was part of the ensemble; In the Heights at North Carolina Theatre and A Christmas Carol at the ZACH Theatre. In addition to dance, I also have a substantial social media following which I think has helped me because social media has become a great tool for casting. My favorite roles include playing Ariel in the Little Mermaid, Cinderella in Into the Woods and Lies Von Trapp in The Sound of Music.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
