Timothy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up south of San Antonio, TX, on ranch land, I was always drawn to the captivating fashion editorials in Vogue. The beauty and storytelling of hair caught my attention, inspiring me to pursue a career that intertwines artistry and expression.
I started in the salon, gradually working my way into styling for galas, fashion editorials, and even film productions. My journey took me to Los Angeles, where I refined my craft and deepened my love for hair. Eager to share my knowledge, I teamed up with Kevin Murphy and his incredible product line. This partnership allowed me to travel the world, teaching and collaborating with talented stylists from every corner of the globe. Walking into my first Fashion Week—from Melbourne to LA to Copenhagen—seeing the backstage buzz and creating sculpted looks for the runway was a full-circle moment, solidifying my passion for the craft.
My journey didn’t stop there. I wanted to bring that passion and excitement back to Texas, creating an approachable, inclusive, and client-centered space. In 2019, I opened Scruff’s Barbershop, where we specialize in cuts, color, and shaves for both long and short hair. At Scruff’s, gender doesn’t define the hair—everyone is welcome, and our services cater to all.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—especially in Austin, where rising rent prices have forced many salons and barbershops to shut their doors. The cost of doing business keeps climbing, and for many independent shops, it’s become harder to balance quality service with the increasing financial pressure.
We’ve seen firsthand how these challenges impact both business owners and clients. When a shop closes, it’s not just about losing a place to get a haircut—it’s about losing a community, a space where people connect, unwind, and feel taken care of. That’s why we’ve been intentional about adapting, making sure we continue to offer an experience that feels personal, curated, and worth coming back to.
