Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Doyle
Hi Timothy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Tim Doyle is an illustrator and print-maker working out of Austin, Texas. Born in Claymont, Delaware and raised in Plano, Texas, Doyle never really felt like he belonged anywhere.
After moving to Austin, Texas in 1999 to fulfill a life-long dream of not living in Dallas, Doyle began showing in local galleries in 2001. He self-published a diary zine, ‘Amazing Adult Fantasy’ from 2001-2003. Doyle has held many nerd-friendly jobs, including running a small chain of comic-book stores, as well as being the first art director/ lead designer for MONDO from 2004-2009.
Doyle launched Nakatomi Inc in January of 2009. That Summer, Doyle started his own screen print shop, Nakatomi Print, in which he and many other artists work out of, as well as commercial printing for clients.
Since then, he has produced art for clients such as Marvel, Dark Horse, Cartoon Network, Studio Canal, and has generally been insanely busy. Doyle also art directs poster series for bands such as Metallica, Failure, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Doyle has had 7 solo art shows at the SpokeArt Gallery in San Francisco and New York and Austin, featuring his UnReal Estate Series of prints. Doyle had a retrospective show in London at The Flood Gallery in October of 2022.
Doyle has two children and Bernie Wrightson’s dog, and hates writing in third person.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since a good portion of what we do is produce tour posters for bands that are ON TOUR, the Pandemic really was a heck of an obstacle. Luckily, my own art sells well enough that we were able to make it.
I’m blessed to have a great team around me, that keeps the gears moving, which definitely helps smooth out the bumps in the road.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, I’ve been cranking out brightly colored pop art on my own for more than 16 years now (and 4 years before that at MONDO) so I guess that would be my life’s work at this point.
I think what I’m most proud of is this loose confederation of talented artists we’ve assembled. I get to work with men and women and everyone in between from all walks of life, from countries all over the world. That’s a pretty amazing feeling.
As far as what sets me apart…I just refuse to go away. I’m here, still standing, doing pretty much exactly what I want to do.
It’s a rare life.
What were you like growing up?
Total nerd. Comics and Video Games and books.
As a short and fat kid, I wasn’t going to be winning any popularity contests. What’s nice is that I grew up into a short and fat adult who has won a small handful of popularity contests.
I literally barely graduated High School once I really locked in on drawing. I’d be up all hours of the night drawing and painting, and I’d sleep through multiple classes a day.
I know some of my teachers must have thought I was doing drugs, but the truth was- I just kept painting and reading until dawn most nights.
