Life & Work with Lisa Treviño Jackson of Austin, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Treviño Jackson

Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Becoming a DJ was a bit of an accident. In 2017 I walked into a neighborhood dive bar and noticed an all-vinyl DJ spinning the jams. I had a relatively large rock and roll record collection at the time, so I thought it would be something fun for me to get into. I never thought it would actually take me this far.
Fast forward to 8 years later, I’ve taught myself to play on different controllers and CDJs, creating mixes, and exploring new genres. I’ve found myself playing festivals, regular residencies, and creating a brand that has opened my creativity in a much bigger way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest obstacles has been trying to find my niche. With so many talented DJs in Austin, it can be hard to work your way into certain clubs and venues that may not see you as “good enough”.
It was so hard to get out of being stuck in my “heavy metal DJ” bubble. But I’ve used that to challenge myself and branch out of what others may expect of me. Dark and heavy music is my passion, so finding my way to “fit the vibe” while staying true to myself has been an experience. I’m now dipping my feet into the goth and dark dance world. It’s been such a wild and fun ride.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m so lucky to be working in music 24/7. I’m proud to work for HAAM (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians as their Musician Engagement Associate. Our mission is to keep our Austin musicians alive and well by providing access to healthcare.
Our music scene is such a diverse community and I love getting to be out there, talking to musicians and learning their journey.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to do things for yourself, but also do them for others. Creating positive experiences for others feels good. It gives purpose, no matter how small the gesture. It’s easy to get caught up in our own thoughts and egos, but helping out a fellow musician or DJ goes a long way in building long term relationships.
