Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Lewis.
Hi Jessie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story really began with volunteering alongside my mom from a young age—it planted the seed for a lifelong commitment to helping others. That early exposure, along with my own experiences with therapy and activism, naturally led me to social work. I earned both my BSW and MSW from UT Austin, initially thinking I’d work in gang intervention. But during my practicum, I discovered a passion for crisis work, which led me to work at an inpatient hospital, before ultimately becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2017.
After several years in the hospital setting, I spent four years in a group practice before opening my own private practice in 2022. I now work with teens and adults through a holistic, social justice lens. I believe therapy is inherently political—clients don’t exist outside the systems that shape their lives. A key part of my work is helping people name and challenge those systems and the harm they can cause.
In addition to therapy, I provide gender-affirming care letters and engage in advocacy outside the office—protesting, calling representatives, and raising over $6,000 for nonprofits by selling political embroidery art I started making during Covid.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not always smooth. Working in a crisis hospital took a toll on my own mental health at times—supporting people through some of their darkest moments in a fast-paced system was both incredibly taxing and deeply rewarding. More recently, starting my own practice has been a challenge, not just in learning the business side of therapy, but also navigating deep personal loss. About eight months in, my dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and for the next year and a half I was balancing building my practice with showing up for my family and grieving in real time. He passed away in June 2024, and since then I’ve been slowly returning to work, rebuilding, and figuring out how to show up fully for my clients again while honoring what I’ve been through.
We’ve been impressed with Jessie Lewis LCSW PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run a private therapy practice, Jessie Lewis LCSW PLLC, where I work with individuals 16 and up, primarily focusing on life transitions—whether that’s identity development, relational changes, grief, career shifts, or mental health concerns like anxiety and depression. My approach is rooted in attachment-focused, relational therapy and is informed by a holistic, social justice lens. I work to understand not just what my clients are navigating internally, but also how external systems and environments impact their well-being. I also provide gender-affirming care letters as part of my commitment to equitable, affirming support for Transgender clients.
