Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanna Comeaux.
Hi Hanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a floral design lover who has always had a passion for all things flowers. Whether it be growing or designing, flowers have been a part of my life since a young age. My mom has taught me what it takes to care for the life of a flower. Growing up, her flower beds were always one of the most important treasures of her home. She made sure to have fresh arrangements in her home at all times.
I have been in the health care setting for almost 10 years now and have always dreamed of something more for my future. My flower career journey all started when my husband and I moved from Louisiana to Austin, TX three years ago. Upon moving here, I stumbled upon floral freelancing. I worked for many different wedding florists in the area assisting on wedding and studio design days! From designing to setting tables, to large-scale floral installations and much more, I fell in LOVE with this job and decided to dive deeper into the floral world.
After years of gaining experience, I took the leap of faith and decided to start my own business. I finally opened Florals By Hanna in 2024 and have loved every minute of this journey! After facing many challenges of finding a career path that was right for me, I realized that my true calling was to be a floral designer. I have always seen myself in a creative career. What started as a small hobby while working a full time job, turned into a passion. Now, I get to do what I love every day! I love wedding floral design and assisting couples to achieve their ultimate dream day. I am a dedicated perfectionist who believes in transforming simple flowers into breathtaking arrangements that evoke emotions and tell a story.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This is not a career I would say is easy or smooth. Starting any business for the first time has its ups and downs, but it is all so worth it to see my clients face when they see the end result!
Owning a floral business can be super rewarding, but it’s also filled with many unique challenges. Some of those that I have faced throughout my first year in the business is:
– Cut flowers have a short shelf life. I am usually racing with time to keep the flowers as fresh as possible for the wedding day.
– This job is a labor of love. Most of the time, I am picking up my floral order a few days before the event, processing, designing, setting up, breaking down and cleaning my studio within a 4 day period.
– Work life balance: It can be difficult to balance my personal life and my work life. My work days consist of many weekends, so it can be difficult to take days off. Sometimes I have to remind myself to take a day off here and there:)
– The main things that come with any business: taxes, marketing, sourcing product, ordering, etc. These things have been a learning curve, but so informative to grow and learn from!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a home based floral studio in Austin, TX that focuses on weddings and events. I believe that florals play a huge role in the production of an event or space. When the colors, textures and movement of flowers come together, they create an unforgettable moment! I feel that I am best known for my whimsical, airy, fresh designs. I love to work with seasonal flowers that are often locally sourced whenever possible for the timing of the event. I specialize in designs that are garden style: light, effortless and fresh. I LOVE working with colorful blooms! I have always been drawn to color and the beauty of a color palette coming together to tell a story. My passion is creating floral designs for weddings! Every couple is unique, which is why I love it so much. I create designs that elevate the atmosphere and reflect their love story. It is so amazing that I am able to craft a different color palette and design for each wedding. No wedding is the same. My favorite thing about floral design is the imperfection of each design. Even though there are certain methods, sometimes designs take me on a journey!
I love to work with clients who put their complete trust in me to translate their vision for their wedding into a floral experience they’ll remember for years to come!
My favorite design to create is bridal bouquets. It can be nerve-racking delivering a bridal bouquet on the wedding day, but always so rewarding knowing they will have these memories forever. The feeling of knowing you were a part of a couples biggest life moment is something so special to me!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Small business owners: NEVER GIVE UP and GO FOR IT! I never would have thought I would be where I am today. It sounds cliche, but if you have an idea or thought, go for it! You will never know if you will be successful until you try. It may take some courage and perseverance to start up a business, but just know nothing will be perfect! This is something I have learned over this past year. I am a perfectionist, but have learned that not everything will go as planned and that is perfectly okay!
