Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Garcia.
Hi Jake, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After years of touring overseas with my band The Black Angels I discovered so many hole in the wall rock n’ roll bars and decided to finally open my own in Austin, Texas. The 13th Floor is inspired by the history of Austin’s legendary and influential psychedelic music scene and is named in tribute to beloved 1960’s icons the “13th Floor Elevators.” Our mission is to provide a little preservation of the local legends before us and to remain devoted to nurturing the local art and music community that makes our city unique. At 711 Red River, the location is sentimental to me as this was the very first neighborhood where I discovered live music at the age of 16. I love our city and we are happy to provide a friendly space and contribute to the tradition of being in the live music capital of the world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Getting people to come downtown. Raising awareness and funding to help keep the local music scene alive in the district..
