Today we’d like to introduce you to Weldon Henson.
Weldon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was always was around music my entire childhood but it really wasn’t until I was about 20 that I picked up the guitar and took it serious. A year later I was in my first band and a year after that I started my own band. A year or so after that I moved to Austin to pursue the dream (2007). Thousands of gigs later I’m releasing my 8th album on May 31st. It’s my best work by far and I contribute the many years and miles to that fact.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything is a struggle most of the time especially in the music business. I have found success by relying on common sense and setting attainable goals. It’s important to have dreams but you have to be realistic in your journey to achieve them, Hard work trumps talent any day and being consistent in pursing your goals is paramount.
The struggles are still here but I think its that way for any small business owner which is exactly how I have to run my career, like a “small business”.
Managing and maintaining a full time band is an everyday process and keeping up with the constant changes within the industry are still two things I have to devote most of my energy to (especially technology and social media).
Surprising enough, the things I find easy are performing and writing music. Even recording is fun and comes natural to me. After these things is where all the real work is.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide musical entertainment for a living. From a solo performance at a small corporate function to a full 5 pc band in front of a thousand people at a festival, its all in a days work.
My music is considered a traditional, Texas dancehall. style. My slogan is “Texas Made Honky Tonk”
After 21 years of playing in bands I am most proud of the past 7 years where I have been able to do it full time and make a living at it. Other than that I am super proud of the album that is coming out May 31st.
I think my flexibility and multitasking ability sets me apart from others. I currently manage everything in my career from booking, band management, producer, PR, to social media and road manager. Lots of hats to wear but its a way to make sure I can make a living at it.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I read many books and have my podcasts I listen too but they are more for relaxation and entertainment to get my mind off the everyday grind.
