Hidden Gems: Meet Trey Tucker of PowerHouseATX LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Tucker.

Hi Trey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My Journey to PowerHouseATX

Growing up, I always loved sports but felt held back by my slim physique and genetics. Everything changed during my senior year of high school when I discovered powerlifting. Experiencing incredible strength gains transformed not only my body but also my mindset. This pivotal moment ignited a deep passion within me to help others overcome their own perceived limitations, particularly those who feel restricted by genetics or circumstances.

Finding My Path

After high school, I struggled to find a clear direction, enrolling in college courses that ultimately didn’t capture my interest. Inspired by my grandfather, I pursued certifications at the Fire Academy and became certified as an EMT basic. However, the harsh realities of emergency response quickly revealed themselves as misaligned with my genuine aspirations.

Embracing Fitness Professionally

A turning point occurred when a friend, who worked as a personal trainer, encouraged me to explore a career in fitness. With his guidance, I earned my personal training certification and secured my first job at 24 Hour Fitness in Austin. Over the next six years, I thrived, further deepening my passion for fitness and reinforcing my dedication to helping clients achieve life-changing results.

Launching PowerHouseATX

The next significant leap occurred when a supportive client, who owned commercial spaces in Austin, motivated my coworker Chris and me to branch out independently. She provided both the encouragement and the physical space necessary to launch our own businesses. Despite encountering significant challenges—including unexpected construction delays, financial pressures, and initial uncertainty—we maintained a positive attitude and unwavering dedication to our clients. Gradually, word-of-mouth referrals and our genuine enthusiasm for fitness cultivated a thriving, supportive community.

Looking Ahead

Today, as the proud owner of PowerHouseATX, I continue my educational journey and will pursue my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at UTMB starting this September. My vision for the future is to continually enhance my skills and knowledge, eventually expanding PowerHouseATX into a larger facility. This expanded space will offer comprehensive training programs and meaningful community-driven initiatives for youth and families, fostering a vibrant, active community for generations to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting PowerHouseATX was not a smooth road. Early on, I significantly underestimated the costs and complexities involved. After signing the lease for our space, we discovered it was far from ready for use. We had to demolish and rebuild several rooms to create an adequate gym area. This process involved substantial unexpected expenses—installing new drywall, painting, installing new baseboards, and purchasing gym flooring, which alone ended up costing more than all our initial equipment combined. Additionally, we began with minimal equipment, which further complicated our ability to serve clients effectively.

Adding to the stress, our flooring installation was delayed by an entire month, leaving us scrambling to figure out how to operate without a proper facility. During this period, our overhead expenses mounted while we had only a few initial clients, creating significant financial pressure. The uncertainty of how we would cover both business and personal expenses weighed heavily on us.

Despite these challenges, my business partner Chris and I remained positive and committed. We stayed focused, taking it one day at a time, dedicating ourselves to serving the clients we did have to the best of our abilities. Word-of-mouth became our lifeline, steadily bringing in more clients. Throughout this stressful period, we invested all available resources into improving our knowledge and skills, attending workshops, earning new certifications, and furthering our education.

Looking back, our positive attitudes, resilience, and unwavering dedication to quality client care enabled us to overcome initial hurdles and build a thriving, supportive community at PowerHouseATX.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

At PowerHouseATX, we proudly celebrate numerous client successes, from significant weight loss and remarkable strength gains to effective rehabilitation after complex injuries. My training philosophy combines meticulous programming with a positive, motivational environment, ensuring clients remain focused, inspired, and consistently progress toward their personal fitness goals.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey is to maintain an open mind and embrace adaptability. When I started my business, I believed I had everything figured out—I was sure about exercise selection, training techniques, and programming. However, over the years, I’ve come to realize that science and trends in fitness constantly evolve, sometimes revisiting older methods and sometimes innovating entirely new ones.

Now, I understand the value of approaching fitness and coaching without rigid attachment. It’s essential to have clear, evidence-based reasons for every decision, while remaining flexible enough to consider new research and practical outcomes. The same approach that works exceptionally well for one client could potentially be ineffective or even harmful for another. Effective coaching means genuinely listening to clients, meeting them where they are, and motivating them toward their goals, rather than imposing your vision on them. Staying adaptable and continuously learning ensures growth and lasting success.
