Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie.
Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated college in 2010 with plans to be a history teacher but at the time we were going through a recession and I could not get a teaching job to save my life. (I even went door-to-door, in-person to schools with my resume in hand and still couldn’t get hired!) I decided to become a substitute teacher in the meantime and because I now had a lot of extra time on my hands, I decided to take a couple of Interior Design classes at the local community college to learn how to draw in perspective. (I wanted to learn how to translate the designs in my head onto paper)
I’ve loved interior design from an early age and in my young, naïve adulthood I thought it would be something I would do later in life. God had different plans and closed a lot of doors for me to lead me to design. After one semester at HCC in their ID program, I was hooked and decided to go back to school and get my degree in ID. The best decision I ever made, even though the college counselors and everyone around me told me it wouldn’t be a good idea to go back to school for an associates when I already had a bachelors degree.
After graduating in 2014, I went on to work for a couple of talented designers in Houston, where I honed my skills and refined my design aesthetic. From there, I decided to move to Austin where I worked for another designer doing model homes. I didn’t love that area of design and left to start my own business in 2016.
For nearly a decade, I’ve worked on projects big and small, from one-room designs to whole home renovations. Each project makes me a better designer through client collaborations and refining my design process. It truly is my passion and one of my greatest joys is helping my clients live a more fulfilled and beautiful life through a well-designed home– Interiors that consider how we move & interact, and designs that create a space for conversation, for gathering, and for living life to the fullest.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! Imposter syndrome is a real thing and that coupled with social media constantly has me second-guessing if I’m good-enough or even making a difference in this world.
I’ve also had my fair-share of mess-ups– ordering mistakes, installation mistakes, construction drawings not being accurate. I’ve even been fired (Once!) and fired a client. It’s all part of the process and has shaped me to be a better listener, planner, documenter, and designer. As well as refining my process!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Jamie Naugle Interiors?
I specialize in high-end residential and boutique commercial design.
For nearly a decade, I have been helping my clients live a more fulfilled and beautiful life through a well-designed home– Interiors that consider how we move and interact, and designs that create a space for conversation, for gathering, and for living life to the fullest.
With a focus on interior architecture, custom millwork, bespoke furnishings, and artful layering of antiques, my designs are rooted in functionality and elevated by timeless style.
What sets JNI apart is heart that I put into every project, every design. With that, I aim to listen carefully to my client’s desires and truly understand how they want to live in their home. With that understanding I’m able to create spaces that feel deeply personal to my client, spaces that effortlessly allow them to function in the very best way within their space. i.e. Bathroom cabinetry that has everything you need at your finger tips, towels perfectly placed within a hands reach, shower controls that allow for an elevated showering experience and materials and finishes that bring joy in the simplest way.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is staying true and authentic to myself. It’s easy to see what other designers are doing and want to do the same. But what I keep telling myself is that I’m not for everyone and everyone is not for me. If I stay true to what I love then that will attach the client that loves the same things.
I want readers to know that I offer a full-service approach to design. This allows for a seamless process and lends to spaces that are edited and cohesive. Throughout the years I have learned that the process allows for the design to be more refined. It doesn’t happen in a vacuum. At every stage we are tweaking and making it better– details get changed, we figured out what doesn’t work and we’re able to come out the other end with the best possible version.
I also offer construction support for renovation and new build projects. I’m right their with the client, in the midst of the dust and chaos, making sure everything we planned for is expertly executed. I’m their advocate and friend and often times emotional support, letting them know their is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have found that the best mentors are my former bosses. Without even knowing it, I have watched how they run their business, how they create connections in the industry with trades and clients and the way they approach design. I’ve taken away valuable lessons and little tidbits from each one that have made me a better designer and business woman.
As for networking, going to industry events has always been a great way to make connections. What has worked well for me is just walking into a new showroom and introducing myself and creating a connection with the salesperson.
