Conversations with Tracy McCurry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy McCurry.

Hi Tracy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story truly started in my grandparents homes, my home growing up, various classes, and then starting my own creative business as a young girl. Fast forward to today, I am currently working as an American Association of Christian Counselors, Master Mental Health Coach First Responder and Master Youth Coach. I use art as the tool and vehicle to bolster change in our groups and communities across Texas and ultimately the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most challenging struggles along my journey have been loss of my parents, and my son Kevin. Suicide losses, much grief, and overcoming adversities of various kinds have aided in my life’s choices to pour from my heart for others. Though, the most challenging was my false imprisonment and incarceration in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice System. While incarcerated, I chose to continue shining a light on the relationship between mothers and their children left behind. As a young mother, artist, and trained in psychology, my goal was to help foster communication through many colorful displays of affection. Creating and sending cards, stationary, cups, t-shirts, wall boards and more through the United States Postal Service to facilitate relationships where words often could not be spoken.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In recent years I’ve worked hard to give voice to the voiceless, through multimedia art, some art gallery training, exhibitions, numerous artist features, “meet the artist”, and paint & sip parties across Texas. I’ve partnered in fundraisers, activism, and advocacy collaborations. I am overjoyed in becoming my own children’s books author & illustrator. I continue to contribute my photography and copywriting to include front page newspaper articles. I am currently following a dream of starting my very own publication, Ink & Evidence Magazine. Ink Speaks. Evidence Stands. As an advocate, I’ve helped change laws in Texas. I have advocacy opportunities for new legislation. I am super excited to start another field of study in Speech and Communications for the telling of my adventurous journey to inspire all generations in their creation!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Mostly, I like the versatility of Austin, Texas. As a longtime resident, and traveling business woman, I am grateful that I get to be a voice for others across Texas. I am grateful to represent the incarceration “creatives” community, their children, their families, and the arts in such a way that fosters the truth about art behind bars. That reaching through miles, counties, and even through from inmates to the TDCJ partners, employees, elected leaders, and law enforcement, that art speaks from heart to heart. As a Trained TDCJ Volunteer, I strive for the changes I wanted to see, when I needed someone like the woman I’ve become. An artist who truly cares about the heart poured from. My for-profit mission is to prevent suicide, to encourage better mental health, and promote healing through faith and art.
