Today we’d like to introduce you to William Dalziel.
Hi William, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m William Dalziel, a U.S. Army veteran with nearly 14 years of service. I started my military career as a Cavalry Scout before transitioning to an MH-60M mechanic with the elite 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment). Unfortunately, injuries sustained during deployments led to my medical retirement.
My journey into 3D printing began over a decade ago as a hobby and quickly grew into a true passion. I’ve always been a creator at heart—from building with LEGO and Erector sets as a kid to exploring the limitless possibilities of modern technology. 3D printing captivated me because it allows ideas to become tangible reality.
After leaving the military, I explored different jobs before realizing my calling when I bought my first modest 3D printer online. In 2018, I decided to invest in my skills and earned a degree in Computer-Aided Drafting Design from West Kentucky Community College. In May 2023, I graduated from Murray State University with a Bachelor of Science in Design Engineering Technology.
Most recently, we purchased a historic bank building from 1912 just outside Temple, TX to expand our operations. I’ve always thought it would be exciting to merge modern technology with a piece of history, and this building allows us to do just that. Today, we produce thousands of parts for various applications and help bring prototypes to life for new startup businesses.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been completely smooth — every journey has its bumps — but I think each challenge has taught me something valuable and ultimately pushed me forward. Between growing the business, moving into a new location, and taking on unique custom projects, there have been plenty of learning curves. That said, I’ve been fortunate to have a great supporting family, strong community support, loyal customers, and the kind of passion for what I do that makes the tough parts worth it. So while it hasn’t been without obstacles, it’s definitely been rewarding and worth every step.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Willd Designs, we bring ideas to life through precision 3D printing and custom design services. As a veteran-owned business with over a decade of experience, we specialize in rapid prototyping, small-batch manufacturing, and personalized solutions for individuals and businesses alike. Whether it’s automotive accessories, product development, or one-of-a-kind creations, we combine innovation, craftsmanship, and top-tier customer service to deliver results that exceed expectations. Located in Temple, Texas, our mission is simple: Make the impossible – printable.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
That’s a tough question. In the past, I probably would’ve said getting my project car running and driving—but that usually led to disappointment when it ran for a bit, then died again, only to sit for another year before I touched it.
These days, what really makes me happy is two things: spending time with my family and helping others bring their ideas to life. Turning something they’ve imagined into a tangible product is what keeps me going in this business. Seeing the joy on someone’s face when they finally hold their idea in their hands—while knowing I get to go home and share those wins with my family—that’s an incredible feeling.
