We’re looking forward to introducing you to Chris LaBasco. Check out our conversation below.
Chris, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently took my 3 year old son with me on a photography trip through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. Before the trip, my wife bought him his own kid’s camera so that he could take pictures alongside me. I was beyond proud of how resilient he was, waking up each day at 4am to make the journey to our sunrise location, as well as hiking different trails into the backcountry. He never once complained, and he often helped me relax or laugh when a situation didn’t pan out as planned.
Besides being a great trip, I hope that the pictures we took together and the sites we visited will ignite his desire to explore the outdoors.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I grew up in the Bay Area of Northern California and gained a great appreciation of the outdoors from a young age thanks to my parents and our summer road trips in the family RV. I fell in love with nature, and it was this love that sparked my desire to hike and travel across the world capturing unique moments. My primary focus has been on landscape photography, but I have always had a particular fondness for sunrises. Photography has always been a way for me to remove myself from day-to-day stress and immerse in the world around me. Whether it’s in the heart of the city or in the middle of a national park, there is something soothing about looking through the lens of my camera and hearing the click of the shutter. Life is nothing without imagery!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My wife has always been my most loyal and loudest supporter. Back when I was deciding on whether to get into the world of photography, she was the one that encouraged me and gave me the confidence to dive in. She saw the potential in me before I saw it in myself, and she is the one that keeps my imposter syndrome at bay after each photography trip. I’m incredibly fortunate to have someone like her in my life who helps keep me moving forward, as well as makes sure my feet stay firmly planted on the ground, and for that I’ll always be eternally grateful.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
As with most people, the fear of failure has always been the thing that has held me back for most of my life. It wasn’t until I put myself out there as a freelance photographer, and then selling prints at art shows/festivals, that my perception of “failure” shifted. To me, a true failure is not trying out of a fear of failing.
Fear of failure can be a significant barrier for many photographers. It might manifest as hesitation to explore new locations or try different techniques, leading to missed opportunities for stunning shots. This fear can also result in overthinking and second-guessing decisions during shoots, which can stifle creativity and spontaneity.
Additionally, the pressure to produce perfect images can prevent photographers from sharing their work, limiting their growth and connection with others in the community. Embracing the possibility of failure as a part of the learning process can help overcome these challenges and encourage a more adventurous and fulfilling photography journey.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The landscape photography industry, like many creative fields, can sometimes perpetuate certain myths or misconceptions. Here are a few of the biggest lies it might tell itself:
1. **Gear is Everything**: Many believe that having the latest and most expensive equipment is the key to great photography. While quality gear can help, creativity, vision, and understanding of light are far more important.
2. **Perfect Conditions are Required**: There’s a common notion that one must wait for perfect lighting or weather conditions to capture stunning landscapes. In reality, unique and dramatic shots can often be found in less-than-ideal conditions.
3. **Post-Processing is Cheating**: Some photographers feel that editing images diminishes the integrity of the photograph. In truth, post-processing is a vital part of the creative process that allows photographers to express their vision.
4. **You Need to Travel Far for Great Shots**: There’s a belief that the best landscapes are always found in exotic locations. However, beauty can often be found in local surroundings, and many stunning landscapes are just a short drive away.
5. **Following Trends Equals Success**: Many photographers think that they need to replicate popular styles or subjects to be successful. Authenticity and personal style often resonate more with audiences than simply following trends.
6. **More Followers Equals Better Photography**: The industry can sometimes equate social media popularity with skill. However, true artistry is about the quality of work and personal expression rather than the number of likes or followers.
7. **Landscape Photography is Easy**: There’s a misconception that capturing landscapes is straightforward. In reality, it requires a deep understanding of composition, light, and often, a lot of patience and perseverance.
By recognizing these myths, photographers can focus on what truly matters—developing their skills, expressing their unique vision, and enjoying the process of capturing the beauty of the world around them.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I am gone, I hope the story people tell about me would be about my passion for being a dedicated steward of the earth, someone who found joy and solace in the great outdoors. My love for nature was not just a pastime; it was a guiding principle that shaped my life. Friends and family will recall the countless adventures I embarked on, whether it was hiking through lush forests, camping under starlit skies, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of a sunrise.
I hope that my enthusiasm for the natural world inspired others to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and recognize the importance of preserving the environment.
Moreover, my goal is to leave a legacy of hope and responsibility, reminding future generations that they, too, have a role in protecting the beauty of nature. As they walk through the trails or gaze at the landscapes I cherished, they will carry my spirit with them, motivated to continue the work I started and to ensure that the wonders of the earth remain for years to come.
