We recently had the chance to connect with keepsake and have shared our conversation below.
keepsake , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
Recently we’ve been learning a lot more from each other and how to better show up for ourselves as friends and musical collaborators. We started keepsake as a way to challenge ourselves creatively while still getting to
play music and spend time with each other. It’s important to us to remember to slow down and nurture our friendship since it makes the music all the more meaningful for us.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We’re keepsake, a dreampop band from Austin TX. We have Orlando (they/them) on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Liv (they/them) on lead guitar and backup vocals, Katya (she/her) on bass and Briana (she/ her) on drums and backup vocals. We write songs about important moments in our lives as well as the smaller fleeting moments. Our single “Battlebots” that came out in April of this year was written by Orlando as a dedication to the early years of their relationship with their fiancé Liv. Currently we just recorded 3 new songs last weekend at Test Tube Audio with Kevin Butler and we’re excited to share them with everyone soon!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I think we were all shaped similarly by our coming of age era’s post college when we had to learn how to navigate the world as adults especially in the wake of the pandemic/ shutdown of 2020. A lot of our music is very nostalgic for this reason.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Hiding in the bathtub! We actually have a song about this called Swallowed Your Hair from the perspective of the tub keeping you safe from the dangers of the outside world. Here are some lyrics from that song:
“curl up in my core
sterile but warm
i’ll stop the world
i’ll stop the world and melt your fears away”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
We believe that music is healing and magical. That a song can hold feelings or memories you didn’t even know you had. There’s no way to prove that, but we see it in the way music connects people.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
We feel most at peace when we’re making music together. Especially when we have a song that comes together pretty quickly because all the pieces just effortlessly fall into place. We can’t say that it always happens but when it does it’s a nice feeling. Everything else fades, and we’re just focused on the sound and the feeling it creates.
