Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sonia Russi of San Marcos

Sonia Russi shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Sonia, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
In a perfect world, the obvious answer to this question is an easy “yes” but I am a realist. There are pros and cons about my work ethic. Let’s start off with the cons. When someone asks me, “What is your weakness?” my answer is I do not work well under presser. I start to get overwhelmed and overstimulated. Even though I feel this way and sometimes I’ll show it, I still manage to function and get the job done because no job is perfect. As for my pros, I am dedicated, passionate and strive to do my best. I focus on making sure I put out my best work and that everything is done correctly and efficiently. I’ve been a cake decorator for over 13 years now and I still always wants the best results. At the end of the day, I would hire me because my pros overpower my cons.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sonia Russi and I have been a cake decorator for over 13 years. I started off doing small cakes at home and got my first job at Sam’s Club bakery when I was 18 years old. Throughout the years, I’ve worked at different bakeries, learning all types of skills and techniques. I decided to start up my own business when I was 26 because I felt like I have gained so much knowledge to be able to run my own business. My business name is Sweet Life by Sonia. I specialize in cake decorating but I do offer other treats. I do cakes for all occasions and events. The details I put in my work is very important to me because it shows the passion and dedication I have. This is truly my passion and I absolutely love what I do!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped my vision of the world is when my father passed away. Before I was very uptight, cared too much about unnecessary things and always had a nasty attitude. Now I am living to be happy and enjoy life. My father was 48 when he passed away and that is such a young. I’ve accepted what happened and I did not want to continue being an unhappy person. Life is to short and we need to live our best and most happiest life because we never know what can happen.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would of told myself to love yourself and be happy with who you are. Don’t listen to any negativity and don’t compare yourself to others.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I think it is important to be the person you are and not put up a front. We all want to be liked and blend in but pretending to be someone your not to achieve that isn’t the way to go. The person I can is the true me. Regardless of what others think, I will never be any different. I love who I am and self love will overpower anything else.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not living my best life.
