Story & Lesson Highlights with Heather Miller of Round Rock

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Heather Miller. Check out our conversation below.

Heather , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Making something weird. I lose track of time when I’m in the middle of a creative shoot especially if there are flowers involved or I’m building a scene. I also lose time editing while binge-watching TV shows I’ve seen a million times. The background noise is much needed. It’s almost like I need the illusion of people around so I can focus.

But I always find myself again when I see a finished edited image that feels like something I did and I love it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Heather, owner of Simone Rae Photography, where I specialize in portraits that feel a little poetic and a little strange (in the best way). I work with people who want something different. Creative studio sessions, fine art, flower-filled portraits, and of course, moody Halloween shoots.

I follow feelings more than rules—whether I’m behind a camera or editing in my zone. My work is more emotionally driven than narrative. I don’t always know the story, I just know it feels like something. And that’s kind of my whole thing, going with the flow, having fun and making images that let people feel seen in a different way.

I’m currently working on more conceptual portraits, plus my annual creepy Halloween sessions. I also photograph families, events, headshots, branding, artists, etc. and I help other creatives behind the scenes through my second business, Heather Rae Helps. Basically, if it involves creativity and heart—I’m in.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
For real, I think its the relationship I have with myself. I’ve spent a lot of time learning to trust my instincts, listen to my feelings, and give myself room to grow and change creatively and personally. It hasn’t always been easy, but that ongoing connection is what’s shaped me the most.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Definitely. When I was in school, ( recently graduated with a bachelors in Healthcare management) my college completion coach was always there—really listening to everything I needed to get off my chest. It made a huge difference having someone who just held space for me without judgment, especially when things felt overwhelming.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
For sure. I genuinely don’t know how to act like anything or anyone else. Anyone who knows me will tell you there’s nothing fake about me.
I’ve even joked about how terrible I would be at a job interview because I wouldn’t know how to say what I’m “supposed” to get the job. Fake it til ya make it.
What even is that?

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
All I can say to this is that Im not sure if I am doing what I was born to do, I know I am doing what I love to do but I am definitely not doing what I was told to do.
