Conversations with Alexandra Lytle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Lytle.

Hi Alexandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been passionate about photography—ever since I was a little girl. I spent every summer with my grandparents, and those summers were nothing short of magical. We’d pack into their motor home and travel across the country—hiking through national parks, riding the Amtrak through the backcountry of the Northwest, and building sandcastles along the beaches in the South.

My grandfather drove the motor home while my grandmother and I scrapbooked our adventures. This was back in the days of film, of course, so the joy of developing photos and reliving freshly made memories left a lasting impression on me.

In high school, that love for storytelling took shape in journalism and yearbook class. Yearbook was where I discovered the magic of telling people’s stories—highlighting their passions, their projects, their milestones. I loved listening, observing, and capturing the essence of who they were.

Fast forward to 2020—lockdown had just begun, and I had just welcomed my first child. I found myself documenting her first year, camera in hand, determined to preserve every little moment for the scrapbooks I hoped to make her one day.

It felt like a full-circle moment.

That’s when I truly fell in love with photography—not just as a hobby, but as a calling. I became fascinated with light, composition, and the endless ways to express emotion through an image. Photography is always on my mind—it’s how I see the world, how I connect with people, and how I tell stories that matter.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced is balancing motherhood and work. Being a mom is the most beautiful, rewarding role I’ve ever had—but it also comes with a constant tug-of-war between giving my all to my children and showing up fully for my passion and business. There are moments of guilt, of exhaustion, of wondering if I’m doing enough in either role. But in many ways, photography has helped me bridge that gap. It allows me to be present, to slow down and truly see the fleeting moments—both in my own life and in the lives of others. It’s a career that was born from motherhood, and every shoot reminds me of the beauty in everyday connection. I may not always get the balance right, but I’m proud of the example I’m setting—for my children to see their mom chasing something she loves, while never losing sight of what matters most.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My specialty lies in engagement and maternity photoshoots—two beautifully opposite seasons of life. One marks the exciting beginning of a shared journey, full of dreams and anticipation; the other, a sacred pause before welcoming new life. I feel so honored to be invited into these intimate, transformative moments. Witnessing the evolution of my clients’ stories and being able to document those chapters is truly the greatest feeling in the world.

What I’m most proud of isn’t just the images I create—it’s the relationships I build. Many of my clients come back to me time and time again, trusting me to capture their growing families, milestones, and everyday magic. That trust means everything.

What sets me apart is my flexibility and deep commitment to creating a comfortable, personalized experience. I often offer in-home sessions, which allow my clients to feel completely at ease in their own environment. There’s something incredibly authentic about documenting a couple curled up on their own couch, or a mama-to-be in the soft glow of her baby’s nursery. Being in a familiar space encourages real connection, natural emotion, and a sense of calm that translates beautifully in photos.

At the end of the day, I’m not just here to take pictures—I’m here to tell your story, your way, wherever you are.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When it comes to photography, I love taking risks. I’m constantly drawn to trying new concepts, playing with light and shadow, and stepping outside the box of traditional poses or settings. While I deeply value timelessness, I also strive to deliver images that feel unique—photos that don’t just follow trends or look like everyone else’s. My goal is to create art that feels true to you—to your story, your energy, and your season of life.

Whether that means shooting in an unexpected location, experimenting with movement, or embracing natural chaos during an in-home session, I’m always looking for ways to capture something real, something bold, something beautiful.
