Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamar Whitehurst.
Hi Jamar, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for this opportunity, I hadn’t really considered myself to become an entrepeneur until post covid. At the time the world was shutting down people were trying to find new avenues to bring in income. I noticed so many people finally pursuing dreams & goals they had which turned into starting their own business. For me, that looked like starting my own podcast called Puzzled Dads. I created this podcast to create a space for men who have children with Autism like myself. There are a lot of groups for moms, but not a lot of spaces for men who tend to not share more personal things and keep things locked inside. I am embarking on my second season as we speak.
My primary job was working at Dell Technologies. During my 17 years there, I learned so much about collaboration, the importance of being agile to changing environment, and how to lead in different ways. My technical skills grew as well as you can imagine at a tech company. In September of 2024, I was caught in a massive layoffs. Dell was not the only company affected as these layoffs happened across the tech industry. Although I did not want to leave, I was not bitter because I knew ultimately God is in control and He would take care of me and my family. I was grateful & thankful for my time at Dell and always wanted to make sure I acknowledge how Dell helped me grow from a young kid out of college to the man I have become today. If it wasn’t for my time there, I may not have been able to start my own consulting firm helping small business and organizations with challenges they may be having.
For about 5-6 months, I was a little lost trying to figure out what my next steps would be. There was one consistent thing I heard from God and that was it was time for me to start my own thing. What that looked like I was unsure. In that same time, I had to pray & fight the fear of what that looks like to be an entrepreneur because that is something I was never sure I could do.
Finally, in May of 2025, I made the decision to start my own consulting company. J2911 Consulting was formed with a mission to deliver Purpose Driven: Consulting, Strategies & Results! The name J2911 comes from my favorite scripture which is Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This scripture has guided me throughout the entire year since I have been laid off as a reminder that my plans are not bigger than God’s plans. And He has greater plans for me than I can imagine.
Since I started my company, I have started with a couple of clients for different aspects to help them in their mission. One is National Education Association, based in Washington D.C., where I help them with an automation project. And the other is Mission Capital, right here in Austin where I serve as a consultant for community engagement.
All things happen for a reason and I am glad to be in this space where I can utilize my knowledge and experience to help others grow into the people & organizations they were designed to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest struggles was getting over my own fears of becoming an entrepreneur. I had never done anything like this before so I was unsure if I could do it. But with prayer and making the decision to walk in faith, I now know that I am doing it and can be successful at it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name J2911 is derived from my favorite scripture Jeremiah 29:11; “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Our purpose at J2911 consulting is to deliver Purpose Driven: Consulting, Strategies & Results!
The services we specialize in is (Strategy & Vision Planning, Organizational Development, Leadership Development, Process Alignment, Quality Improvement, & IT Infrastructure Review).
What may set me apart is that I can help teams navigate multiple issues their organization may face that cross over but may not be in the same departments. I can be highly technical and relational at the same time. This helps me to bridge gaps between those who may struggle with understanding the needs of one another.
Brand wise, I am most proud of what J2911 represents and how I can be a light for everyone I help. It is a reminder that while we make plans that don’t always work at first, we can adjust and re-calibrate to help the plans fit where we’re supposed to go.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
The one thing that has stuck with me my whole life is music. My grandmother started me early so I have a love for all genres of music. That has also helped to be the creative thinker I am today. I have a laid back personality but I like to find ways to be relatable to anyone I meet. When stress is high, I remain calm to help me better think and assess what is really happening at that time. I have always loved being outdoors and I am very active person when it comes to fitness. I combine my technical skills with my creative skills to produce content for podcasting as well as write music. I am also a NCAA Basketball referee.
