Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarasa Wilson-Evans.
Tarasa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my Tax Business in December 2013. But first I started doing taxes for myself and a few family members free of charge, which later sparked an interest in doing them as a business. I really didn’t know where to begin, as far as starting a business. I knew that I wanted to gain more knowledge, so I sought an in-person tax class that I could take. I began taking these classes in October 2013, as I was departing from the military, so that I would be a step closer to opening my business. Upon completing the class, I did more research and partnered with another company to purchase my first tax software. In December 2013, I opened my first commercial location for my business. As a new business owner, from initially being an outsider looking in, I saw so many success stories from others within the industry and I thought to myself that I am going to be making all this money. But let me tell, it did not start like that at all. The money started, but the bills started too! There were several times, I felt defeated and thought about walking away from it all. But there was always something that reminded me of the “WHY”. Two things resonated with me —struggle can lead to two things – perseverance or giving up. Giving up was not an option!
Next, I moved into a more updated commercial space, and my clientele continued to increase, and I could finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. Not a lot of light, but enough to make me keep pushing to get closer to seeing brighter days. In 2020, I then moved to a larger commercial space, whereas that entire space was solely for my business & my staff. The more work I put into my business, the more the business produced in my Favor. Starting a business is not for the weak! I am a Christian, and there were times, whereas my FAITH was tested! I used GOD’s affirming WORD TO FUEL MY FIGHT TO KEEP PUSHING! It was until one day; my husband had to remind me & give me some encouragement. He said—-Baby you know that is a big deal that you —as a black female business owner can own her own business and can hire and pay others and help them build financial security at the same time you are building it for yourself.
This business has been a Blessing to me and my Family. Not only does my business bring light to others, but it brings fulfillment for me. I Love what I do, and I Love bringing smiles to others, or changing the outcome of what they thought was the worst, to something better. To others, it may be just taxes – but for me, I Love serving others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! There were days when the money would come in and days that it did not, but GOD sustained me through it. For a business, I would say, find what you are good at and expand on that! You are also as good as your two hands. Find people to work for you and with you that have your vision and can help you carry it out. Who you have a part of your team can make or break your business literally. Surround yourself with people who speak your language. Success vs Defeat no matter what it looks like!! Looks can kill your FUTURE! I believed I would succeed! Have there been financial struggles? Absolutely, but GOD has always placed people within my path, who has given me FAVOR to help me get through those struggles. Whether I had my rent or not, FAVOR always found me. Those who were sent to show me Favor, didn’t just see where I was, but where I was going!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson that I have learned is to not despise small beginnings! Stay HUMBLE! There is someone starting just like me and if I can help them and give them some guidance and not make some costly mistakes that I made early on, I will always PAY IT FORWARD!
Keep Introducing yourself! There is someone who has never met you or know of your business!
Build on what you already know, and the rest will follow! Don’t stop learning! Be Coachable and flexible with changes!! But most importantly—Keep GOD 1st & learn to incorporate Life/Balance within your business.
