Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Pina.
Hi Jenny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started when I was a little girl in my mom’s hair salon in the Dominican Republic. I was always there having fun and helping out with shampooing and rollers sets. The funny thing is I always told my mom I didn’t want to take over the salon and do hair, because for me it was just for fun . Later on I got married, had our first child and moved to New York in 1992. Then, the realization kicked in during 9/11/2001, when my husband was a Police Officer for NYPD and was called in for duty. I was a stay at home mom at the time, panicking and then realizing I may need to support my kids if anything ever happened. I thank God my husband came home safe but the feeling of that day stayed for a very long time. We then moved to Florida In 2002, I decided to go to cosmetology school, got my license and received my citizenship! Now a little over 20 years later I am a Master Stylist who continues to grow and learn new techniques so that I can advance within the career I am proud of today. I guess the little girl from a small salon in the Caribbean couldn’t deny it was meant to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There were challenges due to moving from the island to a new country. There was a language barrier, balancing taking care of my children and still trying to discover myself alongside other unexpected surprises in life. All of which made me doubt my self and any choices every time. However, those challenges and my faith in God are what helped me push myself to be better than I was the day before. I’ve come to an understanding that there will always be obstacles in life but it’s to my belief that god put those there for a reason.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Master Stylist of over 20 years and a now owner of Jen’s Hair Lounge. I specialize in Haircuts, Color and lived-in highlights / balayage. I’m known for my vibrant reds and beautiful natural balayage for brunettes. Due to my background, I am versatile with all hair types. I make sure to understand my clients needs while guiding them in their hair journey to obtain their desired looks. Though I will do my best to understand what my client wants, I will make sure to always prioritize the integrity of their hair, this is what I know sets me apart from most stylists.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Maybe cliché but what makes me happy is seeing my clients happy at the end of their service. Once I see that smile, and seeing them feel good about themselves in the mirror, it makes me feel that I have reached my purpose and that, feels amazing.
