Conversations with Emily Hamilton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Hamilton.

Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My husband Chris is a retired Marine that grew up in Lorena, TX. I was originally from Idaho and moved to CA to take care of my grandma. I actually met Chris in a dance hall, while he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA.

Upon returning from his last deployment, Chris went through a music therapy program. After that we started playing country music and had a band for about 6 years. We hung it up because we had demanding day jobs and wanted to have more time with our kids.
A couple years later we were ready to leave the commercial construction world, to do our own thing. We saw the club go up for sale again right at that time, so it seemed meant to be.
We had been coming out to the Cotton Country Club since the original owners, Bubba and Jill, had it many years before. We saw this as an opportunity to get back to the music, but on the other side of the stage. As well as have a place for community involvement. We intend to keep this traditional dance hall alive and well for years to come.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a huge undertaking. More than we realized. It is a 125 year old building and needed a lot of updating and repairs and remodeling, of things you couldn’t necessarily see. We also didn’t really know a lot of the back end of things related to the business, so there was definitely a learning curve. We are fast learners though and I think things have gone really well overall. We are told a lot by long standing customers that we have definitely brought it back to it’s glory days.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a dance hall with fantastic food, an amazing bar with a huge selection, and awesome caring employees. We are not just a dance hall though, we are a place that feels like home the moment you walk in. A place you want to bring your kids to teach them to dance, and your parents who still love to dance. We are a place that if you come at any regular interval you will meet and get to know a ton of amazing people that will become like family to you. We keep things traditional, and pride ourselves in being one of the last standing true Texas dance halls.
