We recently had the chance to connect with imani Ogunro and have shared our conversation below.
imani, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think something others are secretly struggling with is human connection. I’ve noticed the detached in having a simple exchange with each other as people, and it pains me to see it on a day-to-day basis. I try to identify what it is, whether it be technology masking reality or our own reservations. Either way, it fuels me to continue to build community because we need it now more than ever! I try to show up as my authentic self so others won’t be scared to do the same, and hopefully that will influence people to have authentic interactions with each other.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Imani Ogunro, and I express myself as a creative spirit. I’m an educator, community advocate, artist, and a woman of culture who is passionate about empowering others through beauty, traditions, and education. As a woman deeply rooted in my heritage, I use my work to celebrate confidence and authenticity. I have always loved all things related to beauty, and now, as a newly self-published children’s book author of a book titled “What’s That Smell? A Girl’s Guide to Hygiene,” I am continuing my mission to teach and inspire young girls to embrace self-care and self-love.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I could not inspire others or become a strong leader. But contrary to that, I’m doing just the opposite. Growing up, I can admit I lacked confidence, but through self-improvement, awareness, and education, I am now able to be the mentor to others that I needed as a child.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be timid or scared to be yourself because holding back is going to cause SO MUCH DIFFICULTY as an adult!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you only meet lifeless people at the top, but I’ve met some of those same people at the bottom, too. Both wandering, looking for something authentic to attach themselves to.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
The laughs I was able to provide to them!
