Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Evan Zwerneman of South East Austin

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Evan Zwerneman. Check out our conversation below.

Evan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Spending time with my dogs/horses has been making me really happy lately.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Evan, the owner of EZ Dog Stay and Play here in Austin. We’re best known for our doggy “school bus” service that picks pups up from home and brings them to our daycare and boarding facility, where they get to play, socialize, and feel right at home. What makes us unique is the extra care we put into making both the dogs and their humans feel like family—we’re not just a kennel, we’re an experience.
My story is rooted in a love for animals and building a service that takes the stress out of pet care for busy owners. After moving from Tomball to Austin, I wanted to create something that combined convenience with real compassion, and I’m proud to see how it’s grown into a trusted community of pet parents. Right now, we’re focused on expanding our bus routes and adding even more enrichment options for the dogs, so every day feels like a new adventure for them.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad. He owns a construction business in Houston and has been a great mentor to me. Watching the way he built his business, treated his clients, and worked hard every day taught me a lot about dedication, responsibility, and doing things the right way.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Growth-focused: “Every challenge you face will shape you into someone resilient and capable—don’t be afraid to embrace the journey.”

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Business + personal blend: “They’d say I care deeply about animals and the people who love them—and that I put my heart into building something meaningful while still making time for the people closest to me.”

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Life perspective:
“Going through cancer taught me that tomorrow isn’t promised. I understand more deeply than most how important it is to slow down, appreciate the small things, and not take health or time for granted.”
