Erin Rivers shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Erin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
In this current economy, with the state of our government, something that is bringing me joy outside of work is the way we are finding community and helping each other. The food drives, food banks and other initiatives designed to help feed those suffering from food insecurity is so heartwarming. It makes me incredibly proud to witness.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Erin Rivers and I’m the owner and operator of Gertha’s Elevated Soul LLC. I’m a caterer, private chef and cooking instructor in Austin Texas and surrounding areas. I specialize in a variety of cuisines but my grandmother’s recipes with elevated twists are what I’m most well known for. I also offer meal prep, and a hand crafted seasoning line.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
This question is so thought provoking but my first thought was my grandmother. She saw my passion for cooking even when I was trying my best to pursue other fields. Initially I was interested in law, then education, and she’d consistently tell me to consider a career in food service. I finally listened and launched my business.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
A few things that suffering has taught me would be the importance of perseverance. It taught me to seek the little joys in life and truly appreciate them. Suffering taught me resilience, persistence and most importantly who I am in the face of difficulties and challenges. It’s taught me to allow myself to feel the losses without allowing myself to drown in them.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
A major belief that I’ve worked hard to undo is that grind culture is the only way to reach success. That rest is only something I can enjoy after tirelessly working. Rest is deserved. I can achieve my goals without constantly exhausting myself. A second belief is that therapy is not for all. My life has changed substantially since dedicating my time to regular therapy sessions.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would dedicate myself to building generational wealth, cultivating healthy relationships and creating programs to assist building housing for the unhoused, feeding those dealing with hunger and creating a variety of programs to teach children valuable and transferable skills. I’d create programs that emphasize the importance of mental health, educational development and social justice. I’d literally dedicate my immortality to making the world a better place.
