Kim Middleton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kim, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that’s been bringing me a lot of joy lately is gaming and getting lost in different virtual worlds. It’s been a fun escape and a way to relax while still feeling connected and creative. I’ve also been spending more time with my dogs, taking them on walks, watching them explore, and just enjoying the way they get excited about the smallest things. It reminds me to slow down and be present.
I’ve also been getting out into nature more, even if it’s just local trails or scenic spots. There’s something grounding about fresh air and open space. Whenever I get the chance to travel, even short trips, it really fills me up. Seeing new places, new faces, new scenery , it just gives life texture. All of those things together have been helping me feel balanced and inspired outside of work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m DJ Kimmy K ! A high-energy, crowd-loving DJ with over 27 years of experience in bringing people together through music. My brand is all about creating fun, inclusive, dance-friendly vibes where everyone feels connected and uplifted. I play a wide range of music from nostalgic throwbacks to today’s hits and I love reading the room to make every set feel personal and memorable.
What makes my work unique is the intention behind it: I don’t just play music; I create experiences. My goal is to make people feel good, seen, and part of something joyful. Whether it’s a community event, festival, wedding, or pride celebration, I’m always focused on energy, flow, and making the night unforgettable.
Right now, I’m also expanding my creative direction integrating live performance elements, visual storytelling, and collaborations that bring more depth to the DJ experience. I’m excited about building spaces where people can dance, celebrate, and feel free to be themselves. Music is the heartbeat. I just get to be the one guiding it.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was just a free-spirited, go-with-the-flow kid who loved people, animals, family, and experiences. I was curious about everything, always exploring, always feeling connected to the world around me. I found joy in simple moments , music in the air, running around outside, laughing with people I loved, and being around animals who loved without conditions.
I didn’t worry about expectations or labels back then .. I just lived. Honestly, I am finding my way back to that version of myself again.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. There was definitely a time I almost gave up. It got really tough ,physically and mentally. I was working long late nights, driving hours across Texas, loading and unloading equipment on my own, and doing it all with a broken hand at one point. Everything felt heavier not just the gear, but the responsibility and the isolation of doing it solo.
I tried stepping away. I tried looking at other paths, other careers, other options. But none of them fit. None of them felt like me. I realized that as challenging as this journey gets, music is my passion and my purpose. I was meant to do this. I just needed to learn how to work smarter, protect my energy, and honor my body while still showing up for the calling I’ve always had.
It wasn’t giving up I needed ,it was growing into a better version of how I do this work.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes , the public version of me is real, but it’s not the whole story. What you see is genuinely me: the energy, the joy, the love of music, the connection with people. That’s all real. But there are also quieter parts of me the side that gets tired, reflects, needs time to recharge, or works through things in private.
The public version is me turned up a bit brighter, louder, more present. The inner version is softer and more personal. They’re both real just different layers of the same person.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think people would miss my energy and joy the most. I show up with my whole heart, every single time. I work hard, I’m dependable, and I always go above and beyond to make sure the experience is special. It’s not just about playing music , it’s about creating a vibe where people feel good, welcomed, and taken care of. That’s what I bring to every event, and that’s what I think would be missed the most.
