Steven Haynes of South Congress on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Steven Haynes and have shared our conversation below.

Steven, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
When people are shopping for a cold plunge they tend to care about two things: price and aesthetics. “Does it look cool, and is it affordable.” But once you own a cold plunge your #1 care-about becomes reliability. Owners simply want their cold plunge to not break down, and unfortunately the majority of big brand cold plunge companies source their equipment from China make with cheaper components which are notorious for failing within a matter of months. Then customers are stuck dealing with slow customer service tickets waiting on replacement parts for weeks that never arrive. That’s why FjORD has made the intentional choice to manufacture our chillers and pumps in the USA from the highest quality materials, built for longevity. So you have fewer maintenance issues and fewer customer service headaches.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Steven, the founder of FjORD. I started FjORD because we saw a quality gap in the market, and wanted to build a better cold plunge. In this spirit, we built the market’s most reliable cold plunge, with 2% failure rates compared with the industry average of 30-40% failure rates. Our team stands behind our brand, with dedicated internal support and best-in-class customer service. We care a lot about each of our customers, and have built our business on referrals from happy FjORD owners recommending us to others.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
This moment came for me at Runningman Festival in September of this year. We were selected to be the cold plunge partner for the nation’s premier wellness festival hosted by Billionaire Jessie Itzler and Devon Levesque. What shaped me was experiencing how so many people were pushing their limits and challenging themselves to “be more” than they were yesterday. It was truly inspiring!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to wrestle with the two fundamental questions that shape a man: 1. Who is God? 2. Who am I? Seeking truth in the first, yields insight into the second, and sets the foundation for your integrity. So keep it simple, and seek what’s real.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my mother for her character. She’s a woman who loves deeply, cares about others, and is loyal to her friends and family and employers. She shows the type of character that I aspire to myself.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I believe my customers and community would miss the energy and “vibe” that FjORD brings to in-person events and interactions. We put our heart into it to create wellness experiences at the individual level and community level that are hard to replicate.
