Community Highlights: Meet AJ Messer of Messer Design + Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ Messer.

Hi AJ, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always knew I would take after my grandfather and build homes. Growing up in West Texas, where my parents owned a real estate company, I was surrounded early on by conversations about quality, thoughtful design, and doing right by clients. From a young age, I loved creating things with my hands—assembling intricate models, sketching ideas, and developing an appreciation for craftsmanship and the small details that make construction exceptional.

While attending Texas Tech University, I worked for a custom home builder, deepening both my passion and my skill. I later signed on with Trammell Crow Residential, where I helped complete over 2,000 units in Central Austin. In 2009, I combined my extensive knowledge of both commercial and residential construction, along with my lifelong love for building, precision, and helping people, to create Messer Design + Construction.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many new business owners, I faced challenges early on—from earning client trust to managing tight budgets and building reliable systems from scratch. One of the most important lessons I learned was the value of finding the right team.

Over time, I surrounded myself with people who shared my standards, values, and commitment to clients. My sister, Alexa, brought vision, and organization to the company. My project manager, Bob, added more than 40 years of experience and became a cornerstone of our field operations. Superintendents Wyeth and Taylor brought energy, problem-solving skills, and day-to-day leadership on job sites. And with the addition of Christine, we gained a CFO whose expertise ensures the business is just as strong behind the scenes as it is in the field.

Together, this team has helped Messer Design + Construction not only excel in craftsmanship and client experience, but also build a thriving, well-run operation that reflects my early belief that great construction starts with great people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Messer Design + Construction?
As a homebuilder, I create custom homes that reflect the way people truly want to live. I specialize in high-quality residential construction with a focus on craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and the small details that make a home feel complete. I’ve loved building things since I was a kid, and that passion for detail has stayed with me. Whether it’s the way natural light moves through a space or the precision behind a hidden joint, I care deeply about the elements most people may never notice at first glance but absolutely feel when they walk into the finished home.
I’m known for combining commercial-level structure and durability with the warmth and customization of residential design. That balance allows me to create homes that are not only beautiful but built to last. I’m also proud of the relationships we build with our clients. I want every homeowner to feel heard, supported, and confident throughout the entire process.

What I’m most proud of is the team I’ve built. Construction is never a one-person job, and surrounding myself with people who share my values has made all the difference. What sets us apart is our commitment to quality at every level not just in construction, but in communication, honesty, and follow-through. We treat every home as if it were our own. That combination of craftsmanship, detail, and genuine care is what truly defines our work.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was the kid who was always building something. If I wasn’t sketching out little floor plans, I was outside making forts, taking things apart just to understand how they worked, or figuring out how to make whatever I was creating even better. I loved the details … the precision, the problem-solving, and the satisfaction of seeing pieces come together exactly as they should.
