Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Collier.
Hi Ron, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a College biology professor and wanted to learn more about online instructional strategies for science. I explored my options and attended Purdue University for my PhD. While at Purdue I begin to branch into areas other than science to use my learning in Training and Development. I worked more and more with small businesses and helping them grow to profitability. Leaving Purdue, I was hired by the Trane company to help their customers, HVAC contractors, to make money in the service and replacement industry. I was teaching small businesses the role of financial, marketing and sales to make them more successful. After seven years, I started my own consulting firm, Collier Consulting Group, and now work with all types of businesses to help them grow, make money and plan for retirement.
Am now the author of the book “Profit is An Attitude: Strategies to Optimize Profits” written to guide small business through the ups and downs of business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never a smooth road. Struggles include trying to convince businesses they need an outside mentor to grow and prosper and to help them transition when they want to retire.
When you start a new business, like mine, you are going to go thru the struggles of most entrepreneurs: you have to wear too many hats. As read in the E-Myth, you have to be a technician to do the work, a manager to control the work, and an entrepreneur to get the work. Every business goes thru these cycles, but what is important is to become only an entrepreneur.
When I started my own business, I had quit my job and 401k and benefits just when my son was starting at UT Austin. Worries about financing my business and getting business were always troublesome, but you have to have faith in your own journey and persevere. My wife was so supportive and helped me live my dream.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Collier Consulting Group?
The Collier Consulting Group helps small business owners organize and prosper in their business. We offer financial and organizational analysis and propose solutions to what needs to be done. We specialize in family-owned businesses up to about 5 million and also perform valuations.
I am most proud of helping over 4000 small business in North America achieve financial success.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Lots of restaurants, bars and live music make Austin unique in Texas and a great place to live.
Cost of living has increased substantially, and we pay more and more for taxes and services that seem to not be effective.
