David, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Managing my home life with my partner dogs and a parrot while mapping out my day to day work schedule filled with consults, errands, and designing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a floral design artist that has owned their own business for almost 18 years now. I specialize in custom tailoring clients design visions by adding my own personal flair to achieve dramatic show stopping florals.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believed that a higher education was necessary to become successful.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Your creativity will be your strongest asset when you grow up. Embrace it and experiment in all aspects of how you view the world.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I feel that floral industry leaders market “floral trends” based on their chosen design aesthetics.
By setting trends you are suggesting the audience to pick and choose a design that will make them feel that their choices are current.
I am a designer that choses not to embrace trends but rather get a sense of the client, their personality, their needs, wants, and prefer to tailor their designs to them versus a “marketed trend.”
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. I am the worst at accepting compliments and praise. Sometimes a simple pat on the back or a clients smile is all i need to give me assurance that i have fulfilled my duties as a designer.
