Inspiring Conversations with Desiree Laux of Black and White Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Laux.

Hi Desiree, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story in design began in 2005, creating custom window treatments and learning the craft of how fabric, texture, and light can completely transform a room. While building that hands-on foundation, I pursued my passion more formally and earned my BS in Interior Design in 2009. Those early years shaped my belief that design should be both beautiful and practical, tailored to real lives, not just trends.

I joined Bassett Furniture, where I was honored to become a top design consultant, working closely with clients on everything from single-room refreshes to whole-home projects. In 2014, I took a leap and opened my own business in North Austin to offer a more personal, independent approach for customers across Austin, Bastrop, and surrounding areas.

As my clientele grew, I saw a desire for unique, curated pieces alongside design guidance. That led me to purchase a historic downtown building in Bastrop and open a home décor store while continuing to provide full design services.

Today, my work blends those two passions—curating distinctive furnishings and helping clients create spaces that feel authentic to who they they are. It has been an evolution rooted in community, creativity, and the belief that every home should tell its own story.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a completely smooth road. The biggest struggle has been getting my name out there and helping people understand what I do beyond simply selling décor. Design is personal, and building trust takes time. As an independent business owner, I’ve had to wear every hat—designer, marketer, buyer, and storefront owner—which can feel overwhelming at times. But each challenge has pushed me to grow, connect more deeply with my community, and find creative ways to reach clients in Austin, Bastrop, and the surrounding areas. Those efforts have slowly turned visibility into relationships, and relationships into the business I’m proud of today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Black and White Interiors?
Desiree Laux is the founder of Black & White Interiors, a boutique interior design firm and home décor store headquartered in a historic building in downtown Bastrop, Texas, serving Austin and the surrounding communities. Her vision was to create a true one-stop shop for all design, renovation, and furnishing needs—guiding clients from early concepts through construction, procurement, and final styling.

What we offer includes interior design services, drapery and window coverings, furniture and accessories, and wallpaper, along with renovation management and curated resources available through our Bastrop showroom and trusted Austin-area partners.

What we are most known for is a hands-on, full-service approach. Our company handles all aspects of décor from concept through installation, ending the stressful days of shopping one store after another to piece a home together. During consultations we listen carefully to clients’ lifestyles, likes, and dislikes, then create a detailed color board and design plan featuring floor plans, space planning, fabrics, rugs, fixtures, and accessories. All furnishings are selected from in-house vendors we know and love, allowing us to control quality while offering distinctive, hard-to-find pieces.

Black & White Interiors reflects the individual taste of each client rather than a single signature look. We collaborate with premiere subcontractors, local artisans, and vendors to deliver one-of-a-kind spaces that are timeless yet functional while respecting budget and schedule.

Brand wise, I’m most proud that the business has grown into a community-focused destination where customers receive expert design guidance alongside beautifully curated décor—making luxury design approachable, creative, and genuinely enjoyable for the families we serve.

What’s next?
My plans for the future are centered on growth—simply put, I want to help more homeowners and take on more design jobs, particularly in the areas where I began: custom window coverings and drapery. I’m looking forward to expanding that side of the business and continuing to show clients how much thoughtful treatments can elevate a space in comfort, beauty, and value. Brand wise, I hope to reach more customers in Austin, Bastrop, and the surrounding communities, building relationships that lead to full-service interiors as well as stand-alone drapery projects. No big changes in direction—just a deeper focus on serving more clients, strengthening my team, and keeping creativity and customer service at the heart of everything we do.
