Hi Bindu, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We are a mother‑and‑daughter duo with a shared love for decor, design, and creating meaningful celebrations, and that passion is what ultimately led us to start GEM of Texas. Our journey began long before the business had a name. My love for floral design and crafting began back in high school, where I made small arrangements and even rented booths to sell my pieces. As I built a career as a Civil Engineer, crafting remained a creative outlet—a source of joy, calm, and expression. After retiring from a 31 year engineering career, I felt called to put my God‑given talents to good use and to create a business that brings me and others joy.
My daughter Preethy’s path looked different but aligned beautifully with mine. She earned a degree in Social Work, but her heart was always drawn to event coordination. Soon after graduating she got the opportunity to do events for a non profit and completely fell in love with the world of events. Over the years she worked for a private wedding company, funeral home, an event venue and a corporate organization. Preethy has had the opportunity to do everything from baby showers, weddings, corporate events to celebration of life funerals. In her last job as a corporate event planner, she was known as the event planning machine, coordinating more than 50 events and generating $1 million in pipeline. After having two children, Preethy stepped back from her career, but her passion for events never faded. Now, she is excited to reignite that passion and pour her talents into the work we are building together.
The idea for GEM of Texas took shape in 2021 after Preethy’s wedding — an intimate celebration that our family planned and executed ourselves. We handled every detail, from decor to logistics, and through that experience we realized how naturally our talents complemented each other. More importantly, we discovered how much joy we felt creating beautiful, meaningful events together.
GEM of Texas has truly become a family‑driven business. My husband, who suffered a life‑changing injury ten years ago, plays a vital role in building structures, assembling decor, and helping with transportation. Preethy’s husband and brother have stepped in as part‑time staff for many events, supporting with setup, teardown, bussing, and bartending. Every member of our family has contributed to our growth in their own way.
Our journey has been shaped by creativity, resilience, and faith. What began as a hobby for me and an unexpected career for Preethy has grown into a family‑driven business built on love, purpose, and the joy of making life’s special moments unforgettable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2025, we officially launched GEM of Texas. Entering the event coordination and decor industry has been exciting but it is also a competitive space with many established businesses. We have been growing steadily, learning the market, and building our client base one event at a time.
Our focus has always been clear: to help clients bring their vision to life—especially when they know what they want but need support to make it happen in a budget-friendly way. We aim to create events that feel personal, memorable, and stress-free. Every challenge along the way has only strengthened our commitment to serving our clients with care, creativity, and heart.
We’ve been impressed with GEM of Texas, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When we eventually launched our business, we named it GEM of Texas, with GEM standing for Graceful, Elegant, and Meraki—a Greek word meaning to do something from the soul, with creativity and love. With every event we aim to create decor and coordinate events with grace, elegance and a sprinkle of Meraki.
GEM of Texas was created with a name that truly reflects who we are and how we serve—soul, passion, and love. These three qualities guide every event we design, coordinate, and bring to life. Our work is rooted in intention, creativity, and genuine care, and we take pride in making every celebration feel personal, meaningful, and beautifully memorable.
We specialize in intimate events such as baptisms, baby showers, small weddings, birthday celebrations, and other milestone moments. Whether a client needs full event coordination, custom decor, or a combination of both, we tailor every detail to match their vision. Our offerings include handcrafted decor pieces made specifically for each event, along with a curated selection of rental items for those who want something unique without the commitment of purchasing.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to detail and the heart we pour into every project. We don’t simply decorate, we transform spaces with purpose, artistry, and a deep understanding of what each moment represents. We are currently focusing on creating custom event decor tailored to each client’s needs, from arches and centerpieces to welcome signs and more. We also offer à la carte services for added flexibility. In addition, we design Baby Shower Gift Boxes and Wedding Trays curated to match each event’s theme—unique offerings not commonly found with other event decorators.
