Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Esquivel.
Katy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello, My name is Katy and I’m blessed enough to call The Blooming Gem Flower House my small business. The Blooming Gem started kind of by accident. I was a stay-at-home mom to my beautiful 3-year-old Babygirl and looking for something to do from home. Where I could care for my daughter and also do something for myself. So… I thought long and hard and remembered the time I DIY’d my wedding flowers, and how I enjoyed it so much that it turned into me helping friends and family with Quinceneras, baby showers and other special events. I thought what if I start a homebased floral business!? So, after some online classes and some planning I began my journey as a private florist. Things moved pretty slow but smooth, considering I was also full-time mommy. I manage everything on my own, so time is definitely very important to me. I do my best to give time to my business but most Importantly fulfill my family’s needs. I’ve learned that saying “no” is ok and that in order to give your best, you have to feel your best. Today The Blooming Gem continues to grow and continues to surprise me considering I thought this was a short-term phase in my life until my daughter started school.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was bumpy at the very beginning, because I was a full-time homemaker, mom and business owner. My main struggle was time management and making sure I stuck to my schedule. I had to constantly remind myself that I originally started the business for me time and self-fulfillment, but my priority was to be a mom first, always a mom first. So, that was hard because I constantly fell into the want to take on as much business as I could, but that would mean less present time with my family, and I didn’t want to miss out on any of my daughters’ milestones. So, to prevent feeling stressed or overwhelmed. I had to learn to say no when needed, and that gave me the freedom to do both a mom and florist. Now that my daughter is in school it is much easier. I get to work from home for the full day and be a full-time mom/wife when my daughter and husband get home. The Blooming Gem continues to grow and continues to provide a personal growth and fulfillment that I never knew or thought I needed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a creative private florist who creates flowers for special occasions. I also work weddings, anniversary parties, birthdays, baby showers, and more. I’m probably most know for my style and quality of blooms and greenery. I shop our local flower farms when season permits so that alone gives me the freshest blooms. I love to include herbs in my bouquets and that provides my clients a fresh aromatic earthy bouquet. I personally shop for all inventory myself. I expose my clients to different flowers and herbs that they aren’t used to and tends to go a long way. It keeps them happy! I’m most proud of my eye for design and flower quality. Honestly, what sets me apart is the design and effort I put into my designs, I make sure that each and every floral arrangement is made custom for my client, and things like adding their favorite color or even adding scents like fresh herbs such as rosemary, lavender, bay leaves, eucalyptus, mint goes a long way. I enjoy that they are always excited to see what I came up with and that makes me proud.
How do you think about luck?
Honestly, I don’t know that I believe in luck, when it comes to business. I think in order to have and create something in your professional and personal life you have invest hard work, time and dedication.
