Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Jones.
Hi Christina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After shifting from corporate tech support to a few years at home with our newborn, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to build a career aligned with my deepest values. Driven by a passion for community health and food equity, I have worked to expand healthy food access for marginalized neighbors, like working at Meals on Wheels of Central Texas and now as part of the Refugee Collective team.
My commitment to this work is deeply personal. As the daughter of a South American immigrant, I feel a profound connection to the refugee and immigrant experience. This, combined with an appreciation for the fresh, seasonal produce I grew up with from my father’s garden, makes my role a natural fit.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of an organization that allows me to grow while learning about textile arts and manufacturing and the vital importance of regenerative agriculture. I am honored to support such a meaningful mission and love sharing the inspiring stories of our organization and our incredible refugee team.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road worth traveling is ever smooth for very long. In this time of our history, we are all facing difficulties every day. In working with refugees, the current political climate has us all worried but we know the best thing to do is to show up and keep advocating.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My position with the Refugee Collective is, Community Engagement Manager. My duties include but are not limited to, any outward facing communications with our supporters and our community at large, attending and representing at any tabling or event. Managing lead on all fundraising campaigns, sales pipeline and volunteers engagement.
My specialty is connecting with the community and giving a concise explanation of our organization and mission. I think my coworkers and folks that I talk with would say I’m know for being lively and energetic. They may also say I’m loud and feisty!
I’m so proud of our organization as a whole. I have a deep connection with the immigrant and refugee experience and I love the ways we support that community. Personally I am proud of myself for being open to new experiences like fundraising and that I’ve found a way to put my personality strengths to good use in my role.
What sets me apart from others is my connection to refugees and immigrants through my mother’s history coming to the US from S. America and my past work with organic farms and food access. Those are pretty specific areas of interest that make me a very good fit in our organization. I’m also always up for talking to anyone! I truly enjoy connecting one on one and also I will always be the person to be the public speaker.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe having an open mind to other’s experiences and readily accessed sense of empathy are crucial for this kind of work. In our organization we tend to work collaboratively so being able to speak your mind and also carefully listen to someone else’s ideas is very important.
